Hi! I designed my coop and had someone local build it. I didn't give a ton of info/direction on the roosts, other than I wanted to be able to remove them if needed. I've known all summer that my roosts weren't exactly "right." But haven't really figured out what I want to do to fix them. Realized I should just post on here and see if anyone has a great suggestion, as so many of you have been crazy helpful to me in the past! :)

Hopefully my nerdy sketch of the layout is helpful. It's a 4x6 coop and currently, I have two roosts that run along the opposite side of the nesting boxes. Originally, there were two long/narrow roosts, one upper and one lower (you can kinda see in the photo on the lower right). I realized they weren't as wide as I wanted as my chickens got older/larger. So as a temporary fix, I removed one of the triangular shaped pieces from each roost bracket (the braces holding the roosts in place) so I could lay a wider, rope wrapped roost across the top (as seen in the bottom, middle photo). Obviously that's where my girls want to sleep -- it's wider, it's comfier, and it's higher. The lower roost is a pain every morning because it's too close to the higher roost and gets pooped on all night. I am hesitant to remove it though, as my RIR is the least coordinated thing I've ever seen (haha) and often relies on the lower roost to help her get up to the higher roost.

I keep thinking about running my roosts across the coop going the other way, going 4' across - attaching the ends right below the windows. I can't run a lower roost across that direction, as my nesting boxes are on one side (no wall to mount it on). So I think I would need to build a mini ramp up to the roost? Or at least partway up, so my RIR has a little help each evening. I don't really want to take up a ton of floor space, or make things harder to clean/inaccessible to clean. Any advice on how to go about this? Or do you have a completely different solve? I may be overthinking/overcomplicating this (my specialty)! Thanks in advance!

*Also considered adding a roost even higher, along the top sides of the windows going across 4' -- but the metal roof takes up a lot of room at that point, so not sure if that would be a waste.

I personally think you're over thinking this, but yeah I'll give my 2 cents worth.

So your issue is:
1) Your RIR needs a step stool to get to the top roost.
2) Don't want a "fix" to take up more space.
3) Lower roost is getting poop on it.

How about moving the roost bar "HOLDER-upper" that is connected to the framing stud that is next to the large human door entrance to the 2x4 stud that is in the center of the window. Then extend that roost bar "HOLDER-upper" to the edge of the chicken door that leads to the run, as that will give you about 4 to 6 inches extra space so it doesn't get pooped on and your RIR can use as a step stool. I'll try to draw what I'm saying and post it for you.

Why is the top roost wrapped in rope? Why not use regular framing, and the run the top roost from wall to wall.
How many birds....just the 4 in pic??
I'd just remove the top roost, it's too close to wall anyway.
Do not wrap roosts, hard to clean and good place for bugs.
It was just something I was trying out. I'd seen it done and wanted to see if it helped give my RIR a little more grip when she jumped up to the higher roost. I had always meant to try it on a longer roost, but the size you see in my photos is what I had on hand, so that is why it's shorter than the other lower roost. I agree that it's too close to the wall, which is one of the things I'm hoping to solve.

And just four hens for now, but plans to expand in small increments in the future.
