Hi yall!

I was hoping I could get some help on picking out some different rooster breeds to choose from!

to make a long story short my very Alpha-Big-Boss Barred Rock Rooster, Doc, lost his brood-mate, Hermes. Hermes was a Welsummer rooster who was a little flighty and wasn’t super interested in trying to out-alpha Doc so they got along great and where best buddies. Now Doc basically does the bare minimum to take care of himself and his ladies. He spends most of his days in the coop instead of outside like he used to and has started to let his ladies run all over him and pick on him so I’m looking for some good breed options to help Doc out.

Our current flock has Barred Rock hens, Isa Browns, and Sapphire Gems if that changes anything.

Thank you so much for any help!

Temperament is up to the individual bird.
Check to make sure doc isn't sick
I don’t think he his, Hermes died of sour-crop and no one else is acting off. I check on him often and he isn’t suffering from anything constant psychically except that he’s lost a bit weight. He still eats his treats and comes to hang out with me when I go out there. He also will eat his normal food when I give it to him. I think he’s just sad and overwhelmed, the first week after Hermes died Doc wouldn’t stop crowing and pacing around the coop and all of his current behavior started the day Hermes died.

The two best roosters we ever had were hatched from the same dad. Genes plays a lot into it. If you hatch some chicks from your own flock, maybe you’d get a good boy in the group? Bonus is one of your hens would raise them!
Agreed, if his temperament is good, hatching out eggs from the flock wouldn't be a bad idea at all

Aside from that, what are your goals for this flock? You can get a good rooster from pretty much any breed. More important than breed is whether the place you got him from breeds for temperament. I would stay away from game breeds though as game roos very often don't tolerate other roos. Outside of that it just comes down to what you want

I do have two broody mamas right now, he does have a pretty good temperament, so this might work. Thanks!!

This flock of ours just gives us eggs, fertilizer, and company 🙂 I’ll keep in mind looking for a place that breeds for good temperament and stay away from game roosters! Thank you so much ☺️
