Shamo, Asil or other fighting breeds as guard hens/rooster?

Hi guys,

So I lost my first chicken 2 days ago now and I have always wanted a shamo or other menacing looking hens/roosters... Do you think because they are fighting breeds that they would be more likely to butcher anything that attacks my hens such as dogs...

Plus because they look awesome... or else the malay but I guess they wouldn't do well in your bog standard house...

Anyone any ideas?

Honestly becouse there were breed to fight other chicken breeds I dont think it mens they would be very aggresive towards a dog coming towards them.I think it really depends on the indivisual rooster.And I think on feathersite a little while ago or some other poultry breeds website I read there actually really docile and nice when theres not another rooster around.So I guess the only info I can give you is to look around swaps in your local area and look for the meanest and most aggresive rooster as long as you dnt mind being in danger of getting spurred and dont have any children.

haha thanks. I would love a sumatra! But i love the look of the fighting breeds...

I have a "fighting" breed.

Mine are indeed the menacing Shamo. . .

And yes, they're VERY good for flock protection, however they're never aggressive towards people, and if socialized enough, for example mine have never had any interest in dogs. They will protect themselves from cats if the cat is being predatorial though. And they're great vermin control!

They're not good for protecting against dogs unless the dog is a small breed, and they've never met the dog before until in "stranger danger" situation.

Mine have sparred away cats, they've attacked and killed rodents, and they've chased rabbits before. If a hawk were to come around, I'm sure they would fight it off, as I've heard of plenty stories of gamefowl doing such before.


And to add, they are not a danger towards kids. . . My stag shown in the photo is the biggest love-puppy one could imagine, and his spurs have a LONG way to go before they're any danger. He's already almost a year old too, and I doubt his spurs will get any bigger for a while. . .

yea they have a 50 square metre electrically fenced off area... but i liked to allow them to run around bushed and run around the garden... and the ducks need the pond sooo i let them around the garden... we had had no trouble with predators such as foxes because i regularly urinate around the garden, as does our dog who had a nasty shock from the fence...

but yea I will be using my axe, we cannot just buy shotguns over here... air rifles is what I can legally buy
