So, we started off with 6 chickens, 3 Speckled Sussex and 3 Silver laced Wyandottes.

We lost 1 Speckled Sussex to a feral cat, so we were sad about the loss and bought 6 Buckeyes. 2 Buckeye chicks died from an unknown sickness soon after buying them. 2 more died as adults, unfortunately.

So.. we bought 4 Black Copper Maran chicks after those losses. All went well, we put a caged area into the coop to introduce them to the older girls. Somehow, one of the 2 Speckled Sussexes got into the closed off area and got herself hung and died. It was sad, but we had enough chicks at the time.

Once all the chickens became adults, we incubated 21 eggs, and 14 hatched. As they were hatching, we bought 4 Buff Orpington chick and 2 Golden Sexlink chicks to raise with them to get some variety. 10/14 of the chicks we hatched were pullets, so we decided to keep them. That is 16 more chickens to our flock. They are around 18 weeks old now.

One of our Black Copper Marans went broody, so we bought her 4 chicks after her eggs didn't make it. 2 Lavender Wyandottes and 2 Frost White Legbars.

Now, we have 30 chickens in our permanent flock.

The chicken math is coming back to try and get us. We are looking to get some Leghorns for some more egg production.

At the moment we are working on fencing in an acre of land to let our chickens range on, so we can become even more of a victim to chicken math!

So... 6 - 1 + 6 ... became 30. 🤔
Sounds about right!

I have 8 dozen eggs to find homes for right now. Bread Shed is a week away. At 10 - 14 eggs a day, I will have another, ummm.... at least 70 eggs by then. About 5 dozen eggs. Hmm. Hey, Honey? Do we have room for another refrigerator?

Chicken math can be confusing sometimes. Before you know it, you have buckets of eggs and nowhere for them to go! Once the 18 young pullets start laying, that will be crazy.

We have someone who has set up a schedule to get at least 1 dozen eggs every week.

Don't curse me! It's only 10 pullets!

I had a gal friend in a nearby town that lives in a retirement center; she used to meet me halfway and take ten doz eggs every week or so to sell to residents there. But... she stopped! :hit I need a new dealer!

Gotta give them the goods to disperse! We have a sign next to the road for eggs, so people message every now and then.

There was a time when it was so slow that no one bought eggs, then suddenly someone came and bought all the eggs we had, and then not long after, someone messaged wanting eggs and we had none, so I had to scrape up a dozen eggs from the day and what we had reserved for ourselves.

It really happens SO FAST, doesn't it? I personally wouldn't have it any other way, though.

I will also say, I was planning on giving a few of ours to a friend so they could start their own flock, but now I'm becoming attached to the ones I was considering giving away. Maybe I should order some more and just give them to her instead 🤷‍♀️ 🐔🐓🐔
That is what I would do just order them some. How nice of you

Started with 10, we had to get rid of our single roo that we gave to our aunt and uncle that had an existing flock with no roo, lost some got some over years and years, ended up with 32 chickens and 3 turkeys, January 16, 2024 30 chickens and a turkey were killed by bobcats, we then had 2 chickens (bantam rooster and bantam hen) and 2 turkeys, got 10 more in febuary, then 8 in march, hatched 2 with 6 on the way.

Well my story starts with 3 or 4, because they needed friends you know 😉 While we were shopping at the farm, I just wanted one of each breed (they had so many kinds). Each time I looked in a pen, I squealed like a little school girl. I looked at my husband and we ended up with 8 different hens (chicks)on day 1. I hope we can maintain that number for a bit. He said in 2 weeks we can make the run bigger, so they will have more room. In my mind it means that we can add another coop and have more friends... That is how I ended up with 6 dogs :celebrate I am the crazy animal lady :barnie:wee:lau:woot:clap:clap:thumbsup:yesss:

Chicken math is the topic close to my heart and you got your chicken math right, correct, perfect in many ways.
I started out with 6 chickens, life is not complete without my 6 chickens. Then before long, one illness after another, I end up with just 3 left. I was in recovering after a knee operation and I can not even remember much in details, but somehow I now have so many chickens that I wonder how I got here?
Just yesterday I noticed my Wyandote girl was flying and screaming at the same time, I remember how I used to love her playfulness way and I have not spend enough time with her to see it. I make note to spend 1:1 time with her today.
Chicken Math = chicken addict. That is just how I end up being a chicken addict. 😍
