Hello, I have a sick hen that’s not eating and pooping yucky stuff. She’s not doing well. She’s very light. I’m not sure what’s wrong with her. I bought this big treat block that had some big pieces of corn in it. It seems all of my chickens started having diarrhea after they were eating it. I removed it when I noticed that. Seems like she has been sick since. What can I do for her? She’s not doing much of anything.

How old is she? Does she lay eggs? Can you get any pictures of the poop and then hen? What do you normally feed? Do they have any granite poultry grit available? How does her crop feel? Can you check it again first thing in the morning to see if it is empty?

She will be a year on 5/3. Yes, she normally lays eggs. I only feed them organic layer pellets and Eaton pet pasture grubs. They have grit & oyster shells available always. Her crop is empty and she’s very light. She’s not eating. I put her some chick starter and I don’t think she ate any. I have a picture of her this afternoon. I thought it wasn’t going to be long. I picked her up and held her and used a syringe to put drops of water on the tip of her beak and she would drink. Then when I put her up for the night I saw her drinking water so that’s was good.

Is she able to pass any droppings now? I would work on getting her to sip water with electrolytes and vitamins, or sugar water from a coup. Nutridrench is good. Offer some wet chicken feed, scrambled egg, bits of tuna, etc to get her taking something. Can she stand and walk if you get her up?

😩😩😩 I just went check on her and she is barely breathing and her head is down.

She’s barely hanging on. Poor girl. I didn’t know what to do. I should have posted a question earlier. I feel like I failed her. 😔

Sorry about your hen. Can you offer some electrolyte water to her beak? Has she been eating or drinking? Sometimes we just lose them sipuddenlysuddenly, and there may not be anything we can do. But I would urge you to try and get a necropsy through your state vet to look for a cause of death. Here is a link for finding your state vet:

What state are you in? If that is not possible, I usually do my own necropsies at home just to look at the inside of the abdomen, and post pictures here for others to offer opinions.

If you want to do a home necropsy, this video below can help with identifying the organs. Pictures of the liver, intestines, large amounts of fat, the oviduct, and gizzard are helpful. Note if there is any yellow fluid present in the belly.

You’re not going to believe this but she keeps standing up and looking around. I gave her as much as she could tolerate of the sugar water. Thank you so much for suggesting that! How do you treat or diagnose impacted crop? I feel like that’s what she has.
