If you notice any or all of these signs:

Paralysis of legs
gasping for breath
foaming from mouth
seizing
death

These are symptoms of salt toxicity...IF you are experiencing this, REMOVE THE FEED, give the bird distilled water to flush out toxins, provide heat, you can lose birds in a matter of minutes from feeding them...

The Merck Veterinary Manual states symptoms of salt toxicity "In poultry, increased thirst, dyspnea, fluid discharge from the beak, weakness, diarrhea, and leg paralysis are some of the common signs of salt poisoning"

Please read this and keep the symptoms in your brain if you encounter these symptoms. Thanks for reading.

Just so you know, there are other diseases that cause signs like this too. They are fairly non-specific symptoms. But its always good to have a reminder of how dangerous salt can be for our birds.

Mistake at the feed mill

Salty water supply - possible if you live near the sea or a salt spring

I'm sure there are other reasons, but they aren't springing to mind.

Most water softener systems soften with salts. The "soft" water will kill your houseplants and will certainly add some "invisible" salt to the diet.

No problem
