Hi!
I had a question about hatching eggs. I haven’t done this myself before, and we haven’t done it at all in a long time, but we recently lost my favorite hen, who laid blue-speckled green eggs, along with our True Blue Whiting rooster! I hadn’t gotten the chance to hatch any eggs from her, and am now left without her and my roo. The last egg she laid is from a week ago, and I am now setting up the incubator in hopes of having a chance to get someone with the speckled egg gene. (I don’t even know if the right roo would be the father, as there was another rooster in there as my family insisted on combining flocks.)
Anyway, as I was putting the eggs in, I realized that the ‘To Hatch, DO NOT EAT’ sticky note was ON THE EGG!! I don’t know what to do, I know that it’s really bad if the pores are clogged, but I can’t give up on the egg when I really want those egg genes to carry on, as I’ve never seen any eggs like them!
I have looked on here and seen the debate about washing vs not washing eggs, and different methods, but there were lots of different opinions, and I wasn’t sure which one might be best in such a situation!
I’m so grateful for this site, I try really hard to help out my chickens and I’m so grateful for a community to go to with my many questions!
Tl;dr — got a week old egg I am trying to hatch because the hen who laid it died, but it had a sticky note on it, and I don’t want the glue to clog the pores. Should I wash it, and if so, how?
