The Sullivan Six

LOVE this picture I took tonight!

I was sick today and spent most of it on the couch, but I did get outside to hang with the girls a bit right before sunset.

:weeWe have eggs! Miss Limu steadfastly sat all day, despite me being in and out of the coop and using power tools to fix up a space for her under the poop board. (And Amalthea sitting on her because she's determined to lay in the nest box no matter what) I slipped 7 Malines eggs into the nest as she tried to peck me this evening.

One thing I found interesting while working in the coop today was how Limu reacted to the other girls. Marcille stayed on the other side of the coop and didn't garner much of a response. Paprika merely stuck her head through the pop door and got growled at (but was apparently allowed in the nest box, since that's where we found her egg). Lady Amalthea was allowed to sit right on top of her with no fussing from Limu!

Sounds like Limu is all set for motherhood. I had to Google "Malines" because I was unfamiliar with the breed; they sound cool.

I'm surprised that Limu allows Almathea to hop on top of her broody self and that she let Paprika into the nest box. Interesting dynamic among your hens.

I'll look forward to updates as the countdown to chicks has begun!

And the completed nursery. It's not prett (yes, I know how to measure and draft building plans, but I didn't wanna so I was mostly making it up as I went along), but it's functional.

Tonight when we put the girls to bed we could hear very faint peeping coming from underneath Limu! She keeps shifting and making soft tuk tuk sounds, and during a brief moment of complete silence I thought I heard tapping, like someone trying to pip!

Unfortunately, when we handled the eggs on Friday only two of them looked viable. Four of them were completely clear, and one didn't look clear but also didn't look like a 17 day embryo. We put that one back under her anyway, but I do not expect it to hatch. Hoping for a pair!
