So I have two 3 week old chicks that were thrown in with 8 other week to 1.5 week old chicks I got. I posted about them being blue and black cause it was hard to decipher but we got it and now one of the older ones is growing these wing feathers????

Someone said mystic Maran in oedigree so that means it’s possibly bred BCM x BCM but I believe the rooster carried barred rock in pedigree due to a breeder not knowing the difference between a BCM and a MM?

That chick certainly looks like it could be barred. Since the barred gene is dominant, all birds that have the gene will be barred. So if the chick is, it had at least one barred parent :)

Okay good to know thank you this is useful information idk if they all are like this but from this specific breeder I will keep my eyes peeled just in case.

Same breeder also sells barred rocks, so could’ve “accidental” cross lol

Responding here because I think I might be in a similar situation. I bought two "blue copper Marans" as chicks but one of them developed the same barred color pattern early on and now they're about eight weeks old and look like this. The normal colored one is in the front (you can see a bit of copper on the head and neck) and the previously "barred" looking one is in the back and also alone in the second picture (not a lick of copper that I can find). So now I'm wondering what flavor I ended up with.

Also, I was a little freaked out by the wattle and comb development at this age, thinking I had two more roosters on my hands, but from other threads here I get the impression that female Marans sometimes develop early, so I'm assuming they're girls until proven otherwise 😬.

These do look like they have the right coloring for blue copper marans but I hate to break it to you... those are most definitely cockerels. These combs are huge and red at only 8 weeks old.

How is this one looking as she (he) grows up? I hace a 2 3 week chick that looks JUST like yours and is supposed to be a BCM

So I did learn something about copper marans blue or black and that is juveniles can get a pattern called scalloping on their feathers and some don’t so they are still pure and just growing out their white on their chick down when going into juvenile stage which causes the scalloping pattern that looked like barred pattern but it disappears instead of staying as they grow. My chicks are beginning to get all black and blue feathers (black for the BCM and blue for the blue copper marans)
I’m ecstatic and no longer worried that I didn’t get what I paid for :)

So I would say just watch your chicks that are beginning to get this pattern it should move in 2 weeks and be black by week 3 or 4 of age if the pattern doesn’t move and disappear then that probably means it’s barred pattern that will stay even when grown up to adult. I got this very helpful advise from a expert Maran club admin :)
