It's not super important or urgent I know if these babies are cockerels or pullets but I think noticing all those little differences can be really interesting. I have recently hatched 9 chicks, all are 2 weeks old, I'm thinking I could have mostly boys. Here are some pictures and notes!
Black Copper Maran #1 ( Saiph )
- quick to feather compared to others, smaller more dull comb, smaller size, and more shy behavior make me think this is one is a pullet.
Black Copper Maran #2 ( Nekkar )
- very slow to feather, lack of tail, and tall posturing point to cockerel. Though the comb is smaller and duller than the third Black Copper I'm still thinking its color and size indicate this one is a cockerel.
Black Copper Maran #3 ( Edmund )
- large orange comb, growing waddles/turning a bit pink, slow feathering, and confidence/posturing when I put my hand in the brooder. This one is my most confident guess for cockerel.
Splash Ameraucana #1 ( Larch )
- fast feathering, and curiosity without overt confidence make me think pullet. Though it's so early that I can't be too sure. This ameraucana is larger than the second.
Splash Ameracauna #2 ( Yew )
- Slow feathering on this chick point me towards cockerel at this stage though I'm really not sure for this one yet. This chick is pretty shy, not flighty, but not as outgoing as others, also the smallest chick.
Easter Egger #1 ( Edith )
- feathering not super fast, but not super slow either, comb smaller and paler but too young. Friendliest chick out of all of them, very curious. I'm thinking this could go either way, but something makes me think pullet.
Easter Eggar #2 ( Polaris )
- slow feathering, and overt curiosity/pecking/confidence are what I have noticed so far on this chick, making me think cockerel so far. It could be noted that this chick is one of the smallest.
Olive Egger #1 ( Psyche )
- slow feathering in first week, followed by faster growth week 2. This chick is absolutely massive, with a bigger/more orange comb. Obviously not definitive but I'm thinking it's likely yet another cockerel.
Olive Egger #2 ( Eros )
- slow feathering, and personality make me think this last chick may also be a cockerel. I've been noticing this chick is one to posture near my hand when I put it in there. Definitely smaller than the other olive egger though.
