Its comb is a bit too red & developed to be a pullet. If that makes sense.![]()
I have noticed he keeps a close eye on the others to where it kind of looks like he’s “protecting” them. I will put my hand down with food in it and he stands back and let’s the others eat out of my hand first. I’m not too concerned as it will be another lesson my children can learn. You definitely have a little boy there.
Chickens can be very rewarding to raise but they don't necessarily cut down your food bills. It takes months before they lay. But they can be so much fun to raise.
Having one boy among your girls can be good. Don't be discouraged just yet. Enjoy your birds!
Having a little cockerel means having a guard for your girls. He will also 'motivate' them to lay in the future. Their behaviors are fun to watch and they are fairly inexpensive to care for.I have noticed he keeps a close eye on the others to where it kind of looks like he’s “protecting” them. Chicken fever... it gets us all eventually.Wow, he may turn out to be quite the gentleman, starting as young as he is. Although we don't save any money raising our own eggs, I have always found they taste so much better, and you can be assured that you are not aiding and abetting the factory chicken farms. If you like the idea of raising your own chickens for meat, you might want to check into that. Still maybe not any cheaper than buying a $7.00 Walmart fryer chicken, but, again, you will be assured that you can have a bit of control over what your family eats when you have chicken for dinner.
Welcome to the forum. I hope you and your family get chicken fever, as we all have.
That's a cockerel.
Raising backyard chickens for eggs is extraordinarily more expensive than purchasing almost any quantity of eggs from the store per month.
