VERY large egg! Normal?

Hi there! My favorite hen, I think she’s a Buff Orpington, lays extra large eggs. A couple weeks ago she laid one almost twice as big as her usual, which are really big. This one egg fills my hand. It’s about as big as a tennis ball elongated. But I’m wondering if this is normal? She’s my favorite and I really do not want anything to happen to her! Is it because she tries to get all the feed or what? Is there danger of her becoming egg bound or engorged and unable to lay some of these eggs? If it’s not normal, what should I do!

Most likely it was double yolked, did you open it?

very cool! getting a double yolked egg is always very exciting! I had a similar experience where A abnormally large egg was laid and it ended up being a triple yolk!

Oh wow!!! Never heard of those! Poor hen!!!

Yay! Double yolked eggs are fun, I like to boil them.

Ohhh that would be good!!! One of my favorite ways to eat eggs is boiled! My poor girl…a double yolk was cool for first time ever in having chickens over ten years, but I would not wish that on my “Buttercup”…

Years ago I had 'Butter' who was a BO. The first year, she laid double yolkers a couple times a week, the second year, a couple of times a month, and the third year, no doubles at all. My boys always thought they were a sign of good luck!

It might just be a one off in which case enjoy. I’d keep an eye on her for a little while though. I have had chickens do this and go on to prolapse.
