Ended Wattle I Do Without You?—2025 Valentine's Day Contest Series

One of my chickens, Violet, was very special to me. Unfortunately she passed away this past fall and it was my fault because I forgot to bring her in at night. Every day she'd come run and greet me at the gate and follow me around whenever I'd feed the rest of the animals. She'd sit with me in the summer and chase butterflies sometimes. She couldn't bare being without me and whenever I'd leave she'd call out to me. Once, I was going into the enclosure and she was exploring on the other side of the property. I called her name and she froze and looked at me. Then a few seconds later, she started running for me, in her little lopsided Langshan way. :love Another time, she broke her leg, and I made her a little place in the house to recover. She had a rainbow of scraps every day and that's how we discovered her favorite foods were cheese, meat, and rice. I also played a variety of music for her, including 10s pop, 80s classic rock, and modern folk music. I wrote all her favorite artists down on a piece of paper and even made a playlist for her (I know I'm insane). So in conclusion, we were very close and it absolutely broke my heart when I found her one morning, knowing it was my fault. Happy Valentine's Day, Violet. I love you so much. I have about ten songs written for you now.

This is one of my only pictures of her.
So sorry for your loss! :hugs :hugs What a precious girl! I've never heard of chickens liking music before (though I know of other birds who appear like they do); very interesting. Thank you for sharing her story.

This is Foxy (left) and Meimei (right) hugging my husband. Foxy has always been a hugger and she needs to be hugged really tight for a good while every day. But this is a rare photo that Meimei joined this hugging activity too! They are both 2 years and 9 months old.
