What did you do in the garden today?

@BReeder! garden sounds fabulous! What's the 3 jars in the middle, looks like chicken soup maybe?

Will anyone eat a hot sauce? That's what I do with all of mine. You can even tame it down with pineapple or mango if you need. I have a good website I use if you'd like me to link it for you, it has TONS of recipes & just as many ways to make it from just chopping it all up, to roasting it or even fermenting or canning if you want. But it can be simple if you prefer.

Neighbor texted last night, the coyote was wandering the neighborhood. He can't get my chickens though, I much prefer him over the bears.

We are on track for the wettest July ever. I'm not sure my squash plants are going to make it. I have more cucumbers than I have any idea what to do with, at least squash I can freeze or make things with, cukes not so much! Anyone have any ideas? I've made bread before & it was good, just like squash bread.

I pruned the heck out of the cuke plants, they're blocking all the light to the tomatoes. I also pruned all the bottom leaves off the maters hoping to get them some sun to ripen, if the sun ever comes out again. I did find what I think was a leaf footed bug nymph on the cukes, but it was faster than me. :smack

Braided the rest of the softneck garlic. Hardneck is still curing, as are the shallots. I was hoping for some small shallot bulbs to replant but they're all HUGE! @NewBoots are you saving any of your shallots to replant - I know you have the giant kind too.
Those 3 jars in the middle are actually homemade relish. The small jars are clear, while most of my quart jars are purple. That big clear 2 quart jar in the front with whole pickles was one I got from my MIL I think. I wish I had more like it. They are expensive to buy though.

Here are my co-broody girls taking their babies out for the first time. Only 3 babies. 2 blue eggers and a RIR. Maybe the others got too hot with 2 moms sitting on them, but I didn't investigate.

Just did a float test on remaining eggs and then discarded them. It's not like I need more chickens LOL. I have 16 hens and now 9 babies. 1 or two of the barnyard mixes already look boyish.

Found squash borers were part of my issues with losing the squash plants. Ugh! They have local squash at our grocery store for about $2.40 per pound. How is it that my neighbors avoid the pestilence?

My Rainbow Eggs are due to hatch tomorrow... :celebrate I think 9 of 12 are still viable. I was thinking of take 2 or 3 chicks and slipping them under a broody to see if she would raise them. There's a couple breeds that I want (copper marans, olive eggs, silverudd) so I might raise those myself just to make sure they don't get inadvertantly killed by the flock. I've had them peck to death quite a few chicks this season. :( The broody I'm thinking of putting them with is far more aggressive than the broody whose chicks were pecked to death. fingers crossed...

Put ❤️ on your post for the chickies! I would have put a 😡 as my second emoji for the SVB. I have them so bad I use row cover on all squash & zucchini until I see a female flower, then remove and keep my fingers crossed!

Peppers can vary in heat from pepper to pepper but I find it more plant to plant myself, and how you treat them can definitely determine how hot they get.

I made a habanero sauce once, did not wear gloves, and was using my fingers to pick pepper seeds and skins out of a garlic press that I was using to smoosh the peppers in. About 20 minutes later it was, come on baby light my fire. about 40 minutes later I was on the phone with the ER telling me basically, suck it up buttercup, and what EVER you do, DON'T go to the bathroom and touch either hole you own. I will NEVER make that mistake again.

Does anybody else think that the heat level on jalapenos varies dramatically from pepper to pepper? Seems like one will be so mild, and the next one will light me up---and I love spicy stuff. I don't really think.of Anaheims as being as spicy as most japs.
For mine heat varies more year to year, but they get regular irrigation. I overwinter jalapeno plants and in more stressful years, they are hotter. The year I barely watered due to drought restrictions they were HOT.

In other news, I was able to prune the tomatoes before dinner, but I didn’t get to hilling up my potato tower which is outgrowing the current layer. Was going to go out now but sky is pitch black and wind started up like crazy. Think we are getting yet ANOTHER storm tonight. Just when the puddles finally disappeared in the garden. My lawn is about 8-10 inches high but we haven’t had 2 days without rain in almost a month so it’s impossible to mow.
Went to a livestock auction today and luckily we didn’t bring the truck (just being nosy, planning to buy some animals but not yet). A group of 4 baby goats went for $35. Good thing I didn’t have the truck. There would’ve been goat math in addition to chicken math! My son has been BEGGING for a goat. With the family farm of 100+ acres, a few goats could help with a lot of the overgrown weeds and brush. And after a while...goat milk cheese... 😍

They may very well be hotter here then up North where it is usually cooler and wetter. I think they get hotter when it is hot and dry.

And they love poison ivy! No goats here. My boys are too proud of their trucks and my husband's Japanese sportscar. Plus my son probably remembers our intact nubian boys trying to mount him when he was younger.
