What did you do in the garden today?

I find that peppers when you stress them a bit they get hotter. Keep them wet and they will be milder. I used to grow like 20 different types of peppers. Basically if I didn't have it yet, Id get it. Id have them in pots all over the place and make all sorts of sauces and stuff out of them. Anyways, for the ones you can do this to, let them dry out until they start to wilt and the water them really well. do this once or twice a week and it'll turn the heat right up on them.

Check your pepper first, some of them, this was a non issue, others, like a Habanero, which are VERY temperamental, one wilt and you'd be screwing with the thing for the next 2 months trying to keep it from dying.

One thing I used to do, I would get these cheap plastic square containers, the throw away ones and Id put my peppers into them and put them up in the front window of my truck. The thing is stewing in the sun all day, so this would dry my peppers out for me. Then take the dry peppers and run them through a cheap 10 dollar whirly bird coffee grinder to powder them, and then you can sprinkle the powder on your pizza, collards, mustards, whatever you want. you can also mix and match what peppers to use to flavor too. I had one mix id give my friends I'd call volcanic ash. You can only imagine. I may get into peppers again but just so many other things im growing now too. Too many projects and dreams, too little time.

So excited! I want them to be hens SO BADLY.... 🤞🤞🤞

Peppers can vary in heat from pepper to pepper but I find it more plant to plant myself, and how you treat them can definitely determine how hot they get.

I made a habanero sauce once, did not wear gloves, and was using my fingers to pick pepper seeds and skins out of a garlic press that I was using to smoosh the peppers in. About 20 minutes later it was, come on baby light my fire. about 40 minutes later I was on the phone with the ER telling me basically, suck it up buttercup, and what EVER you do, DON'T go to the bathroom and touch either hole you own. I will NEVER make that mistake again.

I found out a few months ago what "jalapeño fingers" are. Made something, forget what, then showered an hour later and my hand started to burn... it got hotter, and hotter. So I go to bed and I'm lying in bed in agony, but, you know, toughing it out while I look stuff up just in case. Mustard. Yellow mustard is supposed to do the trick, and if you're out of that try making a paste of ground mustard seed. I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed and test it and eventually fell asleep. High pain tolerance I guess? Always an adventure in the kitchen, I know that.

Personally when I find those kind of caterpillars on my stuff. Trying to pull them off, they go squish and you get some evil green goop on your fingers and everything else. I grab a chicken, pick them up and bring them to the bug in question. I point and the girls gobble them right up. Problem solved, nice and neat like, no uck or muck on your fingers either!

my chickens don't eat those caterpillars:(

I just purchased a second pressure canner so I can do two batches at a time if needed.
Amazon Prime. Delivery in LATE september! OH COME ON! and it doesn't tell you that until after you pay. Sneaky B@s1kds!

I don't bother with any pressure canner. I put jars in any pot they fit, fill in with water and simmer for about 20 minutes.

The only pepper I like is a pickled jalapeno. Other than that I hate all peppers - especially bells! Hate the flavor. I do like the heat from them though, I love to lick my hands after cutting habaneros. :gig I purposely don't wear gloves - even with the hottest peppers. I'm weird.

I don't wear gloves either. then forget I chopped hot peppers and rub my eyes, lol.

Is all that brown material mulch for your garden? It, unfortunately, looks like my front lawn this summer. We have not had any rain here for months....
Mulch material, LOL, that's supposed to be lawn! In between the raised beds is actual wood chips for the walkways, but the surrounding area between the beds and the fence used to be grass. The rest of our field and lawn area around the house looks just like that, too. It should green up again when we get some rain, hopefully.

To far behind to catch up.
Today's canning
In other words, you're too busy processing your awesome harvest to spend a lot of time online, even here! So good! I hope to be where you are in a couple months - here's hoping :)
Anyone planning a fall garden? If so, what are you planting?
I plan to plant fall cabbage in one of my beds, and garlic in a spare tire bed. Hope to plant some potatoes soon as well, if I can plan things right when it comes to harvesting current plants, but not get in the way of the new beds I want to build in the fall. I guess it depends on whether this current weather stays dry, or we get inundated with fall rains.
There's also cucumber soup that can be served hot or cold.
Wow, yes! I remember making that last year, or more likely the year before, and I'm pretty sure it was from a recipe you posted here! It was so, so delicious - could you please post your recipe again? I promise this time I'll put it in the recipe file and not bother you again next year, :)
