What did you do in the garden today?

No, tomatoes need only 10-50 feet separation according to Seed Savers Exchange.

So how does one tell the bees this 😂
I have heard of people covering and AI
Tomatoes are self pollinating. Each flower contains both male and female parts, so yes, they can be covered to prevent cross pollination. Pollination by insects is not necessary. Just a little bit of vibration caused by the wind is enough to cause the flowers to self pollinate. Some touch an electric toothbrush onto the flower stem to achieve pollination.

Good afternoon all. Finally! It was cool enough long enough to get some stuff done outside. Washed out wading pools so they’re ready for storage, cleaned a few things up and worked on the compost pile a little bit. Found some ants so I flooded the area, which also watered some nearby trees, and wet down the compost pile really well. Kicked the broody out of the nest and cleaned all the waterers. The chicks have had an open door since yesterday but haven’t come out yet. The head honcho came face to face with one of the chicks this morning and all went well. I expected it to, she’s pretty chill. The forecast says 50% chance of rain Sunday night into Monday, I am hoping we get some. I watered anyway because I doubt it, but one can always hope. Really looking forward to the cooler temps and getting outside again!

After a whole season of growing I admit I’m disappointed:

Note that they’re supposed to reach ‘up to 8” in length.’ I was half-expecting the insect damage, since the bugs were already perfectly happy to munch above ground. (There’s even munch marks on some of the cayenne! So of course the carrots wouldn’t be spared.)

I left about a third of the box in to hopefully go to seed next year, but I’m questioning if it’s worth it. I’m inclined to blame not enough sun but if that’s the case it won’t do any good to try again.

Either way I’m seeing a crockpot of soup in my future since I don’t think these will be good for anything else.

Hey those look like what I grew..... and why I buy carrots 😅

The rats and mice are just out of control around here... I've only seen one snake all summer. We kept it around since we don't have baby chicks this year and the rodents are bad. Hoped it would help but not enough... I started looking at rat traps. I really like the Uhlik Repeater Trap but can't bring myself to pay $240 for it, even if it is really good. Kept looking and came across this video which got me thinking... I can pick up a 55 gallon garbage can and make this... Wonder if it would work?

I would give it a go! Those rats were loving it lol
