What did you do in the garden today?

I deep straw/hay mulched a 50 foot diameter circle and added grass and wildflower seeds to over winter. They hay will keep the soil a bit warmer and wetter and bring up the worms, which will help loosen the soil. I'll add more water and seeds in the spring. It will be a 50 foot diameter wild space.
The alpacas are driving me nuts with their fall fighting. The two youngest are now full breeding age and have a lot of energy to burn.

I could have SWORN I read online that my lemons would continue to ripen off the tree... I picked ALL of my big ones that were Green-yellow mix. I didn't want to spray them with the Captain Jack's and I figured the tree would be less stressed if it didn't have to support them.

Well snap. Apparently I was wrong. The lemon may turn yellow and get softer but will still be bitter if it has not fully ripened.

Bitter lesson learned I guess.... :he

Shelled the beans.

For context, the top left batch were purplish pods, the bottom left were green with purple speckling, and the small pile on the right I wasn’t sure of the color of the pod. And yes, some of the beans are white. That happened last year too. They’re all supposed to be Trail of Tears beans; some Googling suggested to me that’s a normal recessive for ToT beans but at the time I thought I had some funky hybrids since the provenance of the name was a hand written note on the bowl I got them out of at a seed swap. 🙃

What didn’t happen last year was the coating splitting en masse, as you can see in the second pic. About half the green with purple speckling seeds have obvious splits in them. I’d venture a guess as to why but so many things went poorly this year I’d be spoiled for choice. 🤔

Am I correct in assuming the split-coats won’t be viable for sprouting and seed-saving?

Too far behind, will catch up later if I can.

We finally had a frost last night, not sure if it was good enough to kill everything off or not yet. Probably another tonight & then I can dig up the dahlias. Hopefully.

Brought the fig tree in. Covered the carrots & greens. Strawberries are still producing. Watered the peach tree reeeealllllly well. Chickens got the halloween pumpkins. Need to get a little more straw on the garlic & water it again today.

I signed up for a tray of green beans for our family dinner and found two recipes that made sense to me and made me want to try them. I will make two different types and put them on the same aluminum party tray.

I watched the Chinese restaurant owner's other stir fry videos, and it opened up a whole new world for me.
