What did you do in the garden today?

Old hen is still in spa. Eating plenty of pears in juice.

I've insulated the french door in the bedroom and done most of the windows as well. IF that solve the problem, then I know I need new gaskets on all and will make that a priority for Spring/Summer.

The door that was new and having a problem was an obvious fix. The guys that installed it didn't caulk under the threshold! There was a half inch gap that allowed snow and wind to blow from the North and straight under to where it would hit my carpet on the interior concrete pad and just pile up. OMG. Repair guy was annoyed as heck at the installers (theirs) and so apologetic for me dealing with this for over a year trying to figure it out. So ya.....

Maybe the company will give me a deal on the door and window gaskets for the trouble?? LOL

Got the cabbage and kale transplanted to larger pots and out in the greenhouse. That opens up spaces for other things in the first stage nursery. Lemon balm, catnip and rosemary. I might do true comfrey later, but for now I have plenty of perennials. My "seed starting mix" is 2 parts clay and one part potting mix, unsterilized so they have a chance to get used to my soil as well as the microbes they'll find in it.

The only things I haven't seen emerge in the first set of seeds is the sage and the goji, but those often take longer. I see feverfew in the second set.

Valerian needs to be transplanted tomorrow.

I tried turmeric rhizomes, nothing sprouted yet.
Where are you? Are you planting them inside?

Turmeric purchased at the store may be very slow to germinate, as it is often treated to prevent germination. It can throw that off, if the root doesn't rot or dry up. The first time I grew turmeric it took nearly a year to sprout.

If you can get it from the ethnic stores it's less likely to be treated.

Find roots with growth buds. The first image is best. (These are ginger pictures, but the idea is the same).

I experimented with leaf bags- threw some dirt on the top of the leaves, threw jerusalem artichokes in 2 bags, carrot tops in the other. I wanted to see if they would grow in 90% leaves. We've had sunny weather in the PNW and sure enough they are sprouting even with the bags closed!
Zinnia seeds germinating in trays.
Can't find the verbena seeds I just received 😪
Was thinking of planting something just for the hens - they seem pretty happy as is.
I had 2 okras out of 12 old seeds sprout before the others in my small 12 cell domed seed tray after only 2 days. I hate when this happens because I have to take the dome cover off.

Didn't really do much in the garden today except spray fruit and nut trees with dormant oil and fungicide.

Supposed to get 3-4" of rain tonight through tomorrow. It's been bone dry for the past 2-3 weeks so we can use it.

Anyone ever seen this Kalera brand lettuce at the store? I bought some 2 weeks ago and realized they include the roots. Wondering if I can keep this thing alive and keep it growing? Anyone done that with this brand?

I think that would be a great experiment and fun to try!

Got my spinach lettuce cilantro kohlrabi pack choi and chives planted. I found some carrots broccoli Brussels sprouts radishes cauliflower and arugula that I had tossed aside because I started on some other chores and yeah everything is growing just fine.
Oh I'm jealous! It's still winter here. Can't even think of starting seeds until 3rd week of February. And that's just the peppers because I like to top mine!
