What did you do in the garden today?

No gardening today. Snow and rain mix all day. No accumulation because temperatures are a few degrees above freezing. I put my first rain barrel outside to capture whatever falls out of the sky. I hope to get the gutter installation onto my “to do” list. My seedlings indoors are doing well. We are supposed to have 2 or 3 dry days but still a bit chilly. Tomorrow is laundry and bread making day so hopefully Wednesday I can work on the new garden beds. Also want to get the hoop frames set up over the asparagus bed.

painted and moved the base for the grow out pen into the garden. We then took an hour to move the pen from the shop to the garden. It's an awkward shape and weight, over 200#, and we had to go over 120 feet. But it's there and secured now. Phew. I'm paying for it today.

just got back from town - forgot my wallet so had to come back home but the PRICE OF CHICKS.
They had 15 of 25 sold, rest were Cornish meat....
but they were 11.99 a CHICK! OMG! Just brahmas, nothing fancy or earth shattering!
We got 3 chicks at Bomgaars last Tuesday and they were $4.99 but I signed up for their discount program. The last three and my friend who works there said they don't know when they will be getting more chicks if at all..our blizzard we had last time knocked out the power and killed the chicks there and at the post office waiting pickup. So the chicks they were getting were replacing those orders.

Happened out here too. Our farm store in Seward got in 200 chicks 10 hours before the storm hit. I'm not sure they all made it to homes before it started, but anyway, everyone out here was without power for 3-5-7 days, so they didn't stand a chance unless ppl had gas fireplaces to keep them warm or propane brooders.

Our feed store also received a 250 chick order that was all dead due to cold weather... That was earlier in March I believe.... But they said the hatchery would not be sending replacements. They simply had to wait for the next scheduled shipment.

Sad.... 😕
You would think a better system would be figured out. So many dead chicks is such a waste and so sad.
