My ex-batt, Connie, used to occasionally drop an egg while she was just walking around. I think high production girls might get a little 'loose' as they age, definitely like "peeing your pants if the bathroom's not available"I believe we have all been quite busy with spring activities. My two 9 mo. old kitties have been leaving their presents near the door, so I just toss them to the girls. Over the last few days, 2 shrews, and today a mouse, or large shrew. Do shrew have ears? This one did. So entertaining to watch the game. Have tilled the dirt floors of the coop and fenced run areas, closely followed by the girls who find all the worms and other goodies.
Didn't realize my Sapphire blue girls are 3 years old until I saw my history post about them being 6 weeks old.
So glad it's been drier, so the eggs aren't so dirty anymore.
I have found a couple eggs on the dirt floor in the last week, like someone couldn't wait for the favorite nesting box to be available.
Do chickens have control over the laying process, or not at all?
Kind of like peeing your pants if the bathroom's not available?
These girls are not ex bats. Wait til the last minute, maybe? White leghorn. How is your garden coming along? My ex-batt, Connie, used to occasionally drop an egg while she was just walking around. Shrews do have external ears btw.

Just too cute! And someone definitely has a case of the green-eyed monster...I bought 6 new chicks at the Wilco store on April 2nd, and was given a 7th one that had pasty butt. They are New Hampshire reds, which are supposed to be an improved version of the Rhode Island red. Quick growing and feathering. I think they were about a week old when I got them so they're 4 weeks old now.
I kept them in a box in the house for 10 days, then moved them outside into the chicken coop with a heat lamp, separated from my 2 year old Barred Rocks. Rotted wood chips seem to be the ideal bedding for chicks... poop just disappears.
