all,
i've a chick that whose mother was a black australorp. the father would be of another breed, but not sure which (most roo's in the yard were of lighter color or white). i'll assume this chick will become black.

i've not seen any posts referring to a chicken as a mutt, other than an easter egger. but the easter eggers i've seen have all been red.

what breed shall i call it or shall this be called a black mystery chicken? what color will it be?

this gives me an idea for a name, "Pot Luck."

thanks,
rosco

I call the mixed chickens Mutts

Easter eggers are Araucana or Ameraucana crosses...usually from several generations previous. They commonly lay blue, green, olive green, or pink eggs (easter egg color), but can lay brown as well. They can come in any color, any comb, etc. They are still mutts.

Some prefer to call your cross an Australorp cross, Australorp mix or mutt.

Kinda like dog breeds and mixes (mutts). A XYZ mix or cross is a little more descriptive than mutt, but they still convey the same message.

For a first generation cross I typically say they are a breedX. In your case, you know mama was an asutralorp, so I would call her an australorpX (pronounce as australorp cross)

EE's come in all colors you should see my pen! What you have are "Designer Chickens" it sounds better than Mutt..we love our Designer chickens here!
