What made you decide to get chickens?

I've always kind of wanted to live on a farm. And we moved onto some land earlier this year and started researching chickens and when we saw the silkies we could NOT resist and immediately went and found some!

Now 2-3 months later, we have a bator full of eggs, babies in the brooder in the bathtub and adults outside waiting for their new coop to be finished!

I'm embarrassed to say it was a whim, kinda. I honestly needed a new hobby. I grew up in the country and listened to endless stories about my Nana's chickens and I love fresh eggs. I wish it was something "deeper", but it really was just a whim. That whim turned out to be a very good thing. I am having so much fun and enjoying my girls so much. I would love them even if they never laid an egg, but I have to admit, it is really cool saying "these are my chicken's eggs."

I did a school project on chicken imprinting in High School and fell in love, but becase we lived in the suburbs and didn't have much land mum and dad said I couldn't keep it

Now about 20 years later we have two daughters and still live in the suburbs but with a decent sized block. I convinced hubby that it would be a great experience for the kids (he he he and me) hand now we have 1 pekin bantam, 1 silkie, 2 RIR's and 5 baby sussex chicks which just hatched yesterday from some eggs donated to us by a friend.

I must say that I can feel myself becoming addicted and moving house so we can have more land to raise more chicks - how did this happen????

I really wanted to have chickens because they are funny.
When I was little my mom always bought chickens. They all ended up at the dinner table but they were funny for the time we had them.
My DH was against pets in our house and one day I just bought a dog and a couple months later I bought the chickens.
I thought if he only could experience it, he would be fine with them.
And I was right. At first he said I was crazy to get pets and take care for the family but after a while he took the dog for walks and build me a chicken coop.
Now he has his own coop with Quails and loves them and want he a lot more of them.

I started with 3 chicks and now we have 18. They are really nice pets to have and they bring a lot of joy to our family.
I would advize everybody to get chickens. They aren't only funny but they lay eggs too.
It's like a special treat after taking care of them.

It really is my husband's fault we have chickens. A couple of years ago, he couldn't drive himself to work for medical reasons, and his mom was driving him. They would pass by a house that had chickens free ranging in the front yard. Craig would BAWKK as loud as he could out the window to the chickens to see what they would do. And they would stop, look up, and go back to whatever it was they were doing. He did this for about 3 months, and then one day, the chickens weren't there! I think the owners of the house decided to move the girls into the backyard because of some crazy person BAWKING at her chickens!

Anyways, I have been bugging Craig to get chickens forever. So this summer we bit the bullet. Built our coop, and as a late birthday present got 3 hens (so we thought) to begin with. 3 weren't enough, so we got about 5 more, and now we have 14!!!

I never knew there were so many different colors of chickens. Craig being a wildlife photographer sees the beautiful patterns of the feathers and of course wants more. But unless we get a coop built for our teenagers soon, were gonna have some issues.

So when you see a chicken in someones front yard you gotta BAWWWWWWWWWKKKKKKKK at them to see what they do!

Always had the standard cat, dog, fish pets (still do) but felt the need for something more, well, farm-y. Back in March, I picked my daughter up from a friends house, walked into their kitchen and lo and behold saw a half dozen chickens roaming in their backyard. I was sold on the spot. The only sticking point was DH. He said "no way, no how". It took some arm twisting, but he finally gave in. Just last week, he mentioned that they were "pretty neat". I think he secretly likes them.

I am a vegan, so I need eggs for nutrition. You can live without them, but I love them. So I decided to get chickens so I can eat eggs agian. The only reason I don't eat store bought eggs is because of the treatment of the chickens. I figure as long as they are goingto lay them everyday anyway, someone might as well enjoy them

Now that I have chickens though, I couldn't live without them. Even if they didn't make me eggs. I am in love with them. I had no idea how affectionate they are.

I talk to animals all the time. I will talk to my cats up on the balcony when I go through the gate to get to my apartment, my neighbors below probably think I am weird. But I have to talk to them, they meooooow meoww at me when I drive up. They act as if I have been gone for weeks on end

But that is my fault for having Siamese cats (they talk allllll the time.)
