Ok I have 6 RIR's about 4 weeks old and 3 BR's about 2 weeks old they are all on medicated chick starter. I have a book that says I need to feed them grower from 6-20 weeks and then layer from 20 weeks on. I haven't seen any grower (which my book says is 15-16% protein) feed in my local feed store. Do I really to need to have them on 3 different foods by the time they start laying? And I have a few roos that I won't be able to keep can they eat the lay blend? I bought more starter food when it was on sale is it ok to feed it to the RIR's past 6 weeks? Thanks

I fed mine the medicated chick starter until I switched over to the layer at around 18 weeks. I think there is one (can't remember the brand) that has Flock Raiser that some use for intermediate stages. My birds are happy and healthy at @ 7 months. I thought the chick starter was @18% protein though...

Stop bumping ya'll, it's against the rules!

For the past 18 years I have fed medicated starter until 16-18 weeks and then gradually switched them to layer. Haven't lost one to malnutrition yet. I know a lot of companies have all sorts of feed for transitional stages, but I rarely see them. So I go with what works for me and my chooks. And is readily available.

Happy chickeneering!

I was wondering this also. My 10 RIRs are 3 weeks. I was wondering if its necessary to switch and what to switch too. I need to check my store and see what options I have too.

Thank you for asking this question! Mine are also 6 weeks and I was wondering if I should start transitioning to adult food... Sounds like I've got another couple of months before I've gotta worry about that though

I feed mine starter until 8-12 weeks (depending on when the feed is gone) then switch to grower feed 'til they start to lay. I never feed them layer before they've already started to lay. They don't need the calcium before then.
