Hi

Do and of you have and/or breed Black Spanish turkeys ? If you have pics I would love to see them and I would also be interested in hearing any possible sources to get hatching eggs from. I like old and rare breeds/varieties and these seem to be pretty rare as I hardly ever hear anyone talking about them. I have Bourbon Reds now, I hope to be adding White Hollands from Steve's stock in the spring. And I'm thinking Black Spanish and probably Narragansetts are in my future too. So if any of you breed them or know where I could get some eggs to try, please let me know and if you have pics too then that would be great as well. Thanks

I can't help at all with sources, I'm a total turkey neophyte having raised them for the first time this year, and not this breed.

Just wanted to comment, though, about one thing. Meijer, which is a regional "supercenter" chain based here in the midwest, with stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kentucky, has an ad on tv for "black friday" which shows a very dark/black spectacularly beautiful turkey coming out of a barn, walking across a barnyard, and finally hopping up and perching on a fence. The ad is very good quality and shows the bird very well. He is a very, very beautiful tom, and I the first time I saw this ad yesterday, I said to myself "I bet that's a Black Spanish".

I just googled some images of this breed, and it sure looks like the one in the ad, or very, very similar.

So yes, I can certainly see the appeal, what a stunningly beautiful breed.

My 13 year old daughter was flipping channels Sunday after we got done butchering and Martha had a turkey special. She had a BB turkey, natural, organic and heritage in that order from cheapest to most expensive. When Martha said the heritage was $5.00-$14.99 per lb, she said, this turkey is 14.6 lbs and at $5.00/lb, this is a $73.00 turkey, we need to sell this thing! There are several members here that have them but the site won't be very active until this spring. When the birds stary to lay, you should be able to find some here.

Yes they are. A lot of people see those plain colored varieties like the White Hollands and Black Spanish as plain and boring but I find them to be very attractive looking birds. I havent saw that add though or ever heard of that supercenter you were talking about, but they are beautiful birds too me.

I have a trio and will be selling poults in the spring 2011, but Porters Turkeys have them too. They're $10 per chick everywhere I've seen them. I can usually tell my hens from jakes pretty early so I will be trying to put together some pairs.
Here are some pics of my trio.

Thanks. I know Porters has them and I've actually been looking at his site and I am actually thinking that I will eventually get Red Slates from him and from breeding Red Slates, Bronze are also produced and I dont really think I would want or have room for similar colored breeds and since the Bronze and Black Spanish are kinda similar or both mostly black colored birds. I would probably end up going with the bronze variety, but we'll see. Will you be selling eggs from yours too ?
