Why do interviewers ask hard questions for entry level jobs?

I went to a few interviews for government jobs and when I called back to ask for feedback, I was told that the found a candidate more experience and have been doing the job already..... I concluded that it was just a mock interview, they got someone already, but as their policies must interview outsider.

Government jobs over here required a long covering letter answering all their 5 selection criteria questions.
I should add to the part about "being fair" if it looks like you have potiential even if we have a strong candidate we're leaning towards, if you interview well, we may hold on to your resume and call you when a position comes up.

100% this. I have a couple people in my "call back asap" file. I've also sent candidates to other managers and directors multiple times because They weren't AS GOOD as someone I had made a decision on, but we'd be stupid to not find a hole for them with another team that matched their skills.

That's true! You just never know what other door might open. Every interview is an experience to learn from.

Also have 2 or 3 good questions to ask the hiring manager. This will show your interest in the position, and that you're a serious candidate.

My second job, the interviewer called me to tell me that someone who had worked there before had come back, so they didn't need to hire anyone. But I was the person they would have hired, so they were going to keep my app, and they would call me when they had another opening. He also told me that he thought would be in the next few months, because they were expanding.

They did call me, and they did hire me. Life altering experience, as I met my husband there.

You could say I'm in the gateway to IT. People tend to get their foothold where I am at and promote up. That being said to the rest of the business we're the face of IT so tend to answer for a lot of other groups.
I do tech repair, as in opening the device and fixing it, alongside dealing with the software when necessary. And yelling at computers.
