Woods Style Open Air Chicken Coops

I remember reading that the advised minimal depth in a Woods coop is 14 ft., no?

Anyone have a different experience with that?

In the book there is a plan for a 6x10. I have not experience with them other than what I have read. Its sounds like it more of a math ratio of width the depth.

Do yours open in? And how do you keep them open. This is the one part of the book when I read it that was really confusing.

The windows open out. In the pic ,see those curved metal bars, those are connected to the bottom of each window with a screweye. The bars have holes drilled in them, every 6"s or so. There is a kinda large headless nail, in the bottom of each window frame opening, sticking up about 2"s or so. I can just use the bars and push open the windows, to fully or partially open by aligning one of the holes in the bar with the nail. Also, when the windows are shut, they are held shut with the bar and nail. The hardware clothed screen windows open in, and can be hooked to the ceiling.

Ok, that helps! Is there ever a reason to open the screen windows? Also, it looks like the metal bar goes through the screen window, or is that just the angle of the pictures.

Yeah, when you want to clean the windows. And yes, there is a slot, cut into the screen for the bar to pass through.

Brilliant adjustment mechanism, Jack. What is the height of the back section of your coop at the front, and at the back. And what are similar height measurements in the front, at the high and low section?

Do you have issues with your birds perching on your window adjustment bars?

The highest point of the roof, from the floor, is 9'. The rear wall is 4.5'. Front wall goes from 4' to 4.5'. And no, never had any bird perch on the bars.

Here is our current coop location. We get snow once or twice a year. Do you think this would be the best place for a woods coop? It would face south and it still gets sun, even though the tree is there. In the summer we get a lot of 90 degree days! Or is there a different spot you would suggest?
