Woods Style Open Air Chicken Coops

This is our modified Woods because my son in law is six four and wanted it taller. We have 12 x 16 with thirteen hens with modified deep litter with sand by the pop door. We have a shed side for supplies thats four feet wide. This us in ct. No heat but walls are insulated. I wanted full woods design but it wasnt my call. I have many more pics under other posts. Jack was quite a help with design. Its raised about two feet. Its up on concrete supports and the land us angled. The run is enclosed with two layers of wire.

Thank you so much for the Sketchup model. This coop is fantastic. I hope to use recycled wood for most of the construction. When (if?) the project gets underway i will post some shots for you guys to see.

The model has layers. So you can turn off the roof, siding, etc. It's not perfect and still needs windows framed in it those can be what you have available.
I'm recycling windows. Might use some old louvered opening trailer windows I have on hand but not sure yet. Also picked up 50+ half price 2x4s in a cull pack at Lowes today. Perfect for building coops.

I loved the Woods book so this is the inside with a different roof!
I really want some space for storage like you have, but also want as large a coop as possible. Trying to figure out how to do storage without taking away from the coop space.

I would suggest: make it bigger than you think you need! Make it walk in! You will want more birds.
I keep supplies on my nest boxes, they act like a shelfView attachment 1238160

If you get snow you could cover or just net the run. i don't have a covered run and I am from the Northern Rockies. We get 3-5 feet of snow on average. I just toss hay over part of it so my birds can choose whether or not to enjoy the snow.

I love the deep litter method. It conserves and produces extra heat. It is proven to be better, even for small chicks. I only strip clean my coop twice a year. I absolutely love it. It is cheaper for me.
Since your nest boxes are flat on top do your chickens roost on them? I always see slanted nest boxes but I like the idea of the flat ones so I can use the top as storage.

My chickens have never roosted on my nest boxes, except a young cockerel or two (but, you know how they are ;) )
I use them as shelves. I also have adequate roost space to encourage roosting- and keep my roosts higher than my nest boxes. I have 160" of roost space, suitable for 14 or so birds, and I only have 5 adults right now.
