I did a search of it, and found some good info. Has anybody had good success with garlic for worming your chickens? I noticed about a few days ago my hen was acting a bit droopy. But we've had some lame weather lately, so I though she might just be upset because she hasn't been getting her dust bathing and tanning sessions in. But today I saw something weird in her poo. Didn't take a picture of it though

But it looked like some kind of weird elongated magget

And she hasn't in a few days, I got maybe one egg in seven days, and she hasn't been eating much.

I was looking up natural cures, and found garlic and acv.

I gave a chopped up clove of garlic in a spoonful of plain yogurt, she ate the garlic and left the yogurt

She usually loves yogurt..

Hubs and I are going off island in two days to go see his grandma who is dying of cancer, and I have watching her for me. So I wanted something that would be easy for my friend to do for Pea while we're out of town. And re-evaluate when we get back into town. Everything seems to be happening all at once, we're worried about grandma, but also worried about Chickpea and don't want to worry my friend with all this stuff to do. I'm supposed to be starting school in a couple weeks, but I guess that will have to wait now too, don't mind though. As long as everyone is doing okay, and we get to see grandma while she's still herself and make sure DH is ready to head out on deployment in a month.

Anyways. Back to the chickens. Anyone used garlic? I was going to take a a bulb or two, and she can have one chopped up clove of garlic and a couple drops of acv a day? For one week until we get back.

It might help prevent worms, but my experience is that it will not worm a chicken that has a bad case of worms. If you see worms in the poop, then the chicken needs to be wormed with Wazine, or a product like that. Ivermectin also works, but be careful that you don't use the Ivermectin on a chicken that has a heavy infestation of worms. The Wazine is a safer place to start.

Thanks. I have to go to the feed store tomorrow and will see if they carry Wazine or where I can get some. And I'll inspect her poo in the morning and take a pic to post if I see anything weird again.

Cool. A number of people also use Diatomaceous earth to prevent worms, and some swear that it will cure them. My experience is that while it helps, it won't keep a chicken wormed completely. The Wazine is safe for humans, even if the container will say not to eat the eggs for 2 weeks. I know members that eat the eggs without any problems, and they are very health conscious. Just Google it and you should be able to make an informed decision.

I have heard several things, including apple cider vinegar, red pepper and garlic, which several local chicken people have said works. Many people on byc said it works also, and then many said it didn't. I personally do not want to use any chemicals if I do not need to, so I am trying the garlic, red pepper thing.

Diatematious Earth is only for preventing things in the coop itself, and is not effective when mixed with water.

To the person that said its not common for worms to be seen in the poop....Yes, worms DO come out in the poop. That's how it happens when ANY animal has worms, be it horses, dogs, chickens, cats etc. It is very common for any animal that eats off the ground to have worms and no matter how clean you keep your chicken run, they eats bugs and worms, which carry the eggs of other bugs and worms.

I've started "cooking" for my chickens and had already put rice and beans in the crockpot for their breakfast tomorrow. Because of this thread, I just added some dried diced garlic to the mixture. There's one pen I can't let out to free-range right now so I've been worried about worms.

Thanks for posting this.

Maybe I should add pepper flakes or cayenne to their rice and bean mixture too?

Worms will quickly kill a chicken...I dont recommend using preventatives, ie cayenne pepper and garlic. Get rid of roundworms immediately with wazine then in 10 days use a broad spectrum wormer such as valbazen or safeguard to kill other types of worms as well as roundworms that were missed by the wazine.

By the time you see worms in the poop, the odds are that the bird is already in the process of dying.

Wazine is safe and very effective.
