Wrath's Marans

Do you ever bring in new chicks or adults to introduce new lines or breeds? Or do you solely breed your own flock right now?

I know you have Olive Eggers so I'm assuming you have some blue layers in the mix.

Just curious!

I haven't introduced any outside lines into my BCMs until this year.
Last year I started a second Marans variety of the BBS Silvers.
I'm currently working on crossing the 2 lines to get better type, lower tails and smaller combs into my Black Coppers.

I've got one EE that lays mint and her daughter the OE, with the Ermine Ameracauna and Ermine X EE eggs in the incubator.

I too have kept a closed line until this year. I am getting three new bloodlines this year and fusing them all for a Golden Cuckoo Marans breeding programme. From that point on, I don’t see me introducing new blood in the future, as I’m starting with enough diversity.

My silver duckwing Welsummers have remained closed between my line and their sister line. This is because this variety is so commonly faulty there is no point breeding in the other available stock, and breeding in gold welsummers would impact the colour badly.

It depends on circumstance and breed.

Maybe look for some seriously good ones (low tails, chunky type) so you can justify it as a benefit to your line.
Yes, this.... One of the main reasons I haven't pulled that trigger yet. Lots of research when I have time....if I'm going to spend the money, I want quality to keep moving forward, darker eggs would be a plus but not a priority.
