At what age does a hen go broody?

About 1 year of age for our mixed flock. Welsummers, then BA, then BCM went broody. Now have two tat think they need chicks but are getting an ice bath dunking later today to stop this in the bud.

    Mini Cup Automatic Waterers

Same story. Bought two and mounted to a 5 gallon bucket. They were fine for two weeks and then leaked. I took it apart and everything seemed to work fine. But they still leaked. Now it is time to modify for nipple waterers.

Replaced shavings with a cheap grass ma tcut to size from the big box stores and no more shavings stuck to the eggs.

8 week old chicks out to the coop, but, heat or no heat?

Great question as my 7 week old are getting feisty in their brooder in the coop. Guess its time to build a grow out pen in the coop just for them and wean them from the heat lamp. Currently highs of 60 and lows in the teens in the coop.

    Darn that chicken math!

Exactly! Not too many people get that reference when they get their eggs.

    What a let down!

odd as our australorps are friendly egg laying machines.

    Darn that chicken math!

Two Rhode island reds (Darrell and Daryl), a Dominique (Larry) and an ee named jack two to replace a not too bright welsummer who tried to eat a light bulb and failed to digest it (pulled a klinger from mash)

    Darn that chicken math!

We've already got 7 girls of various lineage and wanted to add 1 or two more. Ended up coming home with 4 four week old pullets. Oh well more comedic relief:)

does anyone use the plastic little giant nest boxes from Fleming?

Think of the home depot plastic spikey entry mats cut to fit the boxes. Hose off and no more wood shavings stuck to eggs.

does anyone use the plastic little giant nest boxes from Fleming?

I have three for my 10 girls. Once they transitioned from their older wood ones they seem to use them exclusively. I use grass mats cut to size instead of wood shavings and can't find any negatives yet. Found them locally to save on shipping.
