Hatchery sexed (incorrectly, I suspect) Easter Egger, 6 weeks old. No crowing yet, but he was definitely later to feather than the girls, and his comb's getting a bit pink. What do you think??
Here in Maine everyone gets chicks between late March and June. We're building a new coop right now and re-starting our flock. I realized that the hatcheries ship all year, so I could start this year rather than wait until next spring.
In so many ways, this makes a TON of sense in my climate...
I just noticed that this pretty 3-week-old EE chick has curled toes. Is it too late to try the sandal trick? Any recommendations for doing so at this age? Do I need VetRap or will bandaids do? Any tips welcome!
I am hoping that someone with personal experience can chime in here. I do understand that black and white easter eggers are often male, although not always. Can anyone with personal experience make an educated guess? This baby is 3.25 weeks old. (Excuse the cat photobomb!)
I've been raising chickens for over a decade and never seen anything like this. I had 10 3-week old chicks, who'd always been among the healthiest and most vigorous I'd ever had. Yesterday I filled their food and changed their water at around 5:00. As I normally do, I added a splash of organic...
I usually have a couple dozen extra eggs each week, and have been putting them on a little table at the side of the road and selling them. It's been cool, so I have not worried about refrigeration.
Now that it's getting warmer, I'm wondering what to do. Clearly, a day at room temp makes no...
My chicks are being shipped April 14, and it's still REALLY cold here. I know the boxes are sized for 25, 50, or 100 chicks. Right now I have an order of 25, but I'd like to add a few more.
However- if that means the hatchery would increase the box size to the 50-count size, might that be...
Thinking about raising chickens for eggs or as pets this spring???
Not sure how to get started? Need help figuring out where your coop should go and how big it needs to be? Need help choosing chicken breeds or getting set up to raise baby chicks? Maybe you already have chickens and it's not...
Hi-
One of my 7-month-old Buff Orpington pullets is suddenly lame. I've brought her into the house, however, our one dog crate (for chicken isolation) is already occupied by our dear 2-year-old EE who was attacked by a hawk on Sunday! So I would love to figure out what is going on here....
Two...
I'm writing a small piece for the Sunrise guide here in Maine. Does anyone know of any mid-cost Maine towns with recently changed chicken ordinances, besides Camden? Thank you!
Stacey
My town is (hopefully) passing a chicken ordinance, which is great...
They are going to propose anyone can have 6 hens, then you'd need 2 acres for anything more than that.
I'd like to request that they add a couple more break-downs of allowable numbers in between, so I am looking for other...
We really wanted to get dairy goats, but the house we ended up buying just has too little land and is too "neighborhood-y" for a herd of full-sized goats. We have 8 chickens and a big vegetable garden, and we need to keep it all pretty low-impact in this fairy chi-chi neighborhood
So.... we're...
We had to order more chicks than we needed this year, so we have 3 happy, healthy started pullets available. These chicks have been handled daily and imprinted on people. Hatched late April, they have just moved outside with a heat lamp at night. They will be off heat altogether in about 10...

We have a small backyard flock of 7 hens (various heavy breeds aged 1-3.)
We feed free choice layer pellets (Blue Seal Organic Life), and offer crushed oyster shell and granite grit free choice. Occasionally they get a handful of scratch or leftovers. They free range in the yard all day, too...
We bought 7 sexed pullets that were hatched April 27. We're suspecting the Plymouth Barred Rock may not be a Chloe, but a Charlie. There's nothing definitive yet, no larger or red comb.... but she/he's feathering in more slowly than the other 6, and we just have a "feeling". It's an adorable...
