farmer here says he avoids trouble with predators by feeding them!
he actually breeds/prepares extra animals just for the predators
they eat at a feeding station at a back corner of his property and rarely venture near his stock
guess it might work, if one has plenty of property
wonder if it...
wow and oh, my!
we've been there, done that....communication breakdown/fail, tied stinking rotten chickens or rabbits to perp/dog(s). etc. wish i'd thought of paint
my sons paint guns are powerful and would hurt so i'm against using them unless..
would actually prefer to paint ball shoot...
sorry for your troubles
soon after moving here and 'before chickens', a little male racoon found his way to my horses dinner table. he was no trouble and was fun to watch.
I soon found myself making up meals for him and placing them in 'his' dish at our woods edge. wasn't long before the...
does your flock scream and make a lot of other noises when predators come near?
a few days ago we had a early morning downpour and just as i was settling down to enjoy the sound of rain, the entire flock had a 'fit'. i jumped up, looked out, thought i saw a coyote but it was a very young, thin...
inside the coop, down low...some pleasing dark color that will help camouflage the dirt
eye level up a light colr might be nice, might help keep it cheerful and bright on dreary days
outside...your fave color or something to match surroundings
and i agree, this can be part of the fun :o)...
waiting is so very hard! I've decided to err on the side of great caution and give them extra time after one of my last hatches. Don't know why but all but a few popcorned out all at the same time and after waiting three days I was pulling those i thought had quit only to discover three of...

reminds me of one of our little ones... she laid her eggs in the metal pail chandelier i'd hung in the ladies parlor. It was a bit of work for her to even attain the height needed to gain access to the lights, I was certain no chicken would bother or could but...
told my dad the young rooster he was holding "certainly has a big pecker" ! thought dad would fall off his chair and bust something trying not to laugh
embarrassed myself when talking to an old farmer about the roosters he was selling...he had referred to them as cocks so... so did I... "so...
well, melinda90, he and now mom, both have come to love the entire process. the only thing is, he now has bragging rights! he beat my hatch rate! i tease him... it was just beginners luck lol always a great idea to share your knowledge and fun with the children, keep us posted...
Best wishes to all on their May hatches. I just found this thread, so glad !
Dad has alzheimers and had been depressed and agitated, so unlike himself, so... i took a few of my March hatch chicks to him and he was so excited and interested - we were thrilled to see improvement but then he began...
Oh, that's it! Thanks! I now have over 100 chicks, they're cute but...looks like we're improving but no real winners yet.
This is a good life lesson, if you want something close to the best you must begin with the best available or wait (not my strong suite)
Thanks for the replies, helpful...
