BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Hi Everyone. Chicken math has struck again! I am getting 5 new chicks in April. The last two batches of chicks I used a card board brooder. This time I am going to use a portable playpen. It seems like an easier idea. They are going to be in my house. I have the Brinsea Ecoglow for a heater. I...

    Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

My 16 week old Bantams started singing the egg song this week. First my barred Plymouth Rock sang Monday late afternoon. My mouth dropped open. I kept begging her to do it again. But she sang for about 30 seconds and that was it. Tuesday my Cochin Merryweather sang the song for about 1 1/2...

At what age do they begin to roost at night?

My smallest chick Prissy started roosting this week. They are 12 weeks and she is up on the roost all by herself. The other 7 are still piled up on the floor. I'm sure it won't be long before the others get the urge.

post your chicken coop pictures here!

In regards to the 2x4 short end vs flat side a lot of different books I have read suggest to use the short side of a 2x4 for bantams. The reason they give is because they end up pooping more on the board than into the poop tray(if your using one). I started my roost on the short end since my...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

I've been letting them out for a few hours everyday now. They love it. I have fenced off parts of the backyard to contain them a little more. I have an above ground pool with an attached deck and I didn't want them over there. I tried letting them out yesterday around 11:00 and they weren't...

    Taj ma coop/fort knox

This is my coop for 8 bantam chicks and this is my coop story. I bounced all around when I started planning my coop. First I was going to get a tractor kit. Then I was going to get a coop kit. Next it was an Amish built coop. Then back to the kit. The main factors were money, size, and having...

At what age do they begin to roost at night?

I absolutely love BYC! My mother is convinced my roost and poop board are too high and that's why they aren't roosting. The roost is about 4 feet from the floor with a wide poop board shelf a few inches below it. I have eight 10 week old bantams of different breeds. They all sleep in a pile...

    Holding our hens

Having the cameras has been great. Just the other day I caught a chipmunk sneaking into the coop. I wouldn't have seen that if I didn't have the camera's. My set came with 4 cameras. I have one in the coop, one in the run and 2 looking out behind the coop. If it hadn't been a 4 day process...

    Holding our hens

I bought La View. I would NOT recommend it. Installation was really difficult, I had to buy longer camera wires and the remote viewing only lasted 1 day. I have to call verizon and see If they can help me. Viewing from my house is great but I wanted the remote viewing option.

Is it really so silly to love my chickens? It can't be just me!

Completely understand. I'm the crazy bird lady. These are my first ever chicks. I had no idea how attached I could get to them. They are one of the best pets I have ever owned. Because of this I have built a Fort Knox coop and run. I'm going to try letting them run around in my fenced in back...

    Holding our hens

I go and sit in the coop with my 10 week old chicks right around bed time. They have all started to fly up and sit on my back, shoulders and lap. I was so worried they wouldn't be friendly. One of them gets on my shoulder, and hunkers down. She would stay there all night if I let her. I think...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

I have 8 ten week old bantams. They have and 8x8 coop and a 10x10 run attached to it. They have been in the run for 3 weeks and have killed all the vegetation. I have been giving them lawn clippings a few times a day which they love. I am tempted to let the out into my fenced in back yard to...
