Neck Wound (Large Skin Flap) - What should I do?

Sure thing! I apologize it took so long to reply. We are moving 1200 miles next week so I have given my girls to a dear friend so they don't have to deal with the trauma of moving. I haven't really kept up with the site, since I'm no longer a chicken owner. In fact its kind of sad, because I...

Neck Wound (Large Skin Flap) - What should I do?

I left it alone. It was quite awhile before I realized how deep and how large the skin flap was and I decided to heed everyone's advice and leave it alone. She healed just fine. I treated her with a prescription strength triple antibiotic (like neosporin) every other day for awhile and did not...

Feminist Hen Refuses to Start Laying. Thoughts?

Great idea :D I was debating trying that- maybe I should... I've never seen her separate from the flock /sneak off and lay, though. But I'm clearly out of ideas so you may be right!

Feminist Hen Refuses to Start Laying. Thoughts?

That's why I teasingly call her feminist. She's pretty characteristically female. She will squat but only sometimes. My understanding is that males won't ever squat correct? I'd think she'd be an obvious roo by 7+ months?

Feminist Hen Refuses to Start Laying. Thoughts?

That is comforting, thank you, Judy! I'm a worried "mother hen" with my girls, and while I know each is different I found it odd that she's matured physically but not laid. My other wyandottes (silver laced) laid around 23 weeks in the midst of very cold and cloudy weather, so this is new...

Feminist Hen Refuses to Start Laying. Thoughts?

The last two girls I added to my flock of 5 are now well over 6 months old. All are laying except my Gold Laced Wyandotte, Ginger. She was one of the fastest to mature: her crop reddened and grew and she started doing the "egg squat"- all over 6 weeks ago, maybe longer. But then she stopped...

    Everyone is discouraging me

Here is my first grow out pen that costs about $60 in material as I had the half sheet of plywood. I still use it 4 years later, just has better wheels and four of them to move around easy. The child's play house was no longer being used so I just screwed it together to strengthen it and put two...

Emergency! Please help! Hawk attack left my girl severely injured

In case anyone is wondering, I wanted to report that Rosemary is doing very well after her hawk attack. Her neck has fully healed and most of the feathers have grown back. She does have feathers coming out of the skin flap that was left after the attack. I worried about her recovery, but she is...

When do Wyandottes generally start laying?

YEA, Congrats! Today I got three eggs for the first time and I share your excitement! My GLW should be close behind- with my Australorpe bringing up the rear- her comb is just starting to mature. Such an exciting time

Oh dear, I think I may have a SLW Roo... Thoughts PLEASE!

My pleasure! I figured it may be helpful to follow up and show before and after pics. I can't believe how much she's changed! Turns out, she was just faster to mature. For being from the same "batch" they are very different SLWs. Rosemary has whiter head feathers and lighter eggs, where Pepper...

Oh dear, I think I may have a SLW Roo... Thoughts PLEASE!

Thank you very much! My first ones were fried so I could taste the egg better but I can't wait to try the omelette - YUM!

Oh dear, I think I may have a SLW Roo... Thoughts PLEASE!

For those on the edge of your seats, rest assured that Miss Pepper is in fact a girl- she was the first to mature and the first to lay in fact! She gives us a beautiful speckled brown egg every day Here she is in action and all grown up. Thanks again for the reassurance everyone! She's changed...

Can I add a Silkie to my existing group of 5 standard size pullets?

Thank you so much! I figured there would be a little bit of adjustment, but overall safety was the biggest concern. Now I just wish I had the ability to tell gender, I'd be all set. No roos allowed in the city

Comment by 'aggielady' in item 'Plastic Nesting Box'

Oh good! Glad I'm the only one & yours could use it My pullets must be a little larger than average (or I got a smaller nest box) because they literally could barely fit just one, much less two.

Can I add a Silkie to my existing group of 5 standard size pullets?

I have 5 pullets (2 SLWs, 1 GLW, 1 Red Star and 1 Australorpe) about 20-25 weeks old now. I am in the city and can only have 6 chickens total, but would LOVE to add a Silkie as my final chick. Of course I would integrate slowly and under constant supervision, however I'd love your feedback on...

Which is more quiet? The Austerlop or the Bared Rock?

I AM a beginner! I've only had chickens about 5 months now. They are equally well suited breeds for beginners, I think. Their differences are very slight in my flock- mostly superficial things like coloring, size & comb. The Wyandottes are a bit larger (but they are older) and slightly more...

Suggestions Please! New layers won't lay in new coop

My concern with locking them in for a few days is the noise-- they are SO LOUD-- bothering my sweet neighbors; and the fact that the coop area is almost totally dark. The food is in the attached run too. Should I allow them to be in the run too or would that defeat the purpose?

Suggestions Please! New layers won't lay in new coop

My oldest two (SLW) started laying just about a week ago. Before now, I didn't wanted to invest in a fancy new coop if for some reason I had issues and had to give the chickens away. I have had them now almost 6 months and all is well and of course I love them dearly, so I invested in a nice new...
