    Saying Goodbye.

Today I rehomed my 4 hens, I had them just over a year and to be honest keeping chickens wasn't for me. I learned a lot from you people on here and you are the best, I was thinking of it a few weeks ago and finally I did it. My youngest daughter knows someone with a farm and they said they would...

    Chickens eating eggs

Good news and bad news. They all laid but for some reason in the same nest. so got 4 eggs, kind of geed news. Now the bad news, one of the eggs broke as it rolled to the holding part of the nest, the shell was very brittle, all of the insides were in the holding area. I go to pick up the other...

    Chickens eating eggs

Update: I had 3 go in the nests and laid, not sure where or what the other 1 has done, has she missed a day or laid in the garden somewhere, I did a search but didn't find anything. Anyway moving on, decided to modify the old wooden next box, I took out the roll-aways from the new metal boxes...

    No home for rooster

I did see a clip where a guy held the chicken under his arm then held just under the head and he pulled the head forward stretching the neck, he said it break the spinal cord and the chicken then feels no pain, it was quick.

    Chickens eating eggs

I anticipated your answer, I did that and all but one went in and laid, the one that didn't kept going in and coming out, she wasn't sure what to do even though the others were in there. I witnessed her going in later a few times but still no egg, in the end I left her to it, I haven't checked...

    No home for rooster

I've seen a few clips on YT of different ways to dispatch a chicken. I have often wondered why nobody has come up with an Guillotine type method, I'm sure that would be very quick. If somebody has an idea of some kind of holding method I think it would soon catch on, also so the actual cull is...

    Chickens eating eggs

As for the roll-away boxes I recently got, I have only one hen that uses them. The others have found a spot in the garden to lay, even when it rains. This morning I wrecked it so they can't go there, I spent a lot of money on the boxes, I'm a bit disappointed. I think I'm going to have to...

    Some Short Ones.

My family said I'd never amount to anything, then I invented an invisibility cloak... If only they could see me now!

Hen lays more than one eggs in a day

Just to add to this thread, one of mine laid 2 eggs today. One this morning and another later in the evening, and as already said the second egg was a very soft shell. It stayed in one piece till I got it in the house then I broke it open in to a dish, the egg inside looks fine. So maybe no egg...

Greetings from Westgate on Sea, UK

Is it just one doing the bullying? Another idea is separate the bully from the flock as suggested but instead of keeping it in sight of the rest of the flock put it in the garage or somewhere else out of sight. Do this for about a week or a bit longer if possible, then re-introduce it back to...

    Very late introduction!

Hello from Manchester UK and welcome.

    Zinnia is in Chicken Jail

Another idea is lock her up as you have done but keep her out of sight of the rest of the flock for about a week or more, then re-introduce her. She will be regarded as a new member and she will be bullied by the rest of the flock to put/keep her down in the pecking order. The flock don't see...

    Chickens eating eggs

Try putting straw at the front of the nest boxes as well at the entrance, I know the rollaway won't work with the straw but get them used to laying in them then slowly remove the straw bit by bit.

    Night roost

I had the roost fairly high and noticed that too as Shadrach above says, I saw them fly in to the side wall of the coop when they jumped down so I lowered it. As long as they have a roost for the night I don't think it bothers them.

    Chickens eating eggs

@dpenning, Well as I said earlier, mine wouldn't go in the new boxes so I put some straw in them and as you say defeated the rollaway function, I also put some fake eggs in as well. That worked so now I removed the straw and they go in them now and I have the rollaway function.

    Chickens eating eggs

Someone posted not long ago about mustard eggs, he said the chickens loved them lol. I did try to do some myself once, I made a right mess, I was doing well at first then the egg broke and I had mustard all over the place. :barnie

    Chickens eating eggs

Update on the Rollaway nest boxes: At first they just looked at them, I had 2 broodies so only had 2 others laying. One of the laying hens found a hiding place in the garden to lay rather than use the new nest boxes. The other one seemed to stop or she too laid somewhere, anyway I added some...
