Zack at Myshire Farm and I are going to be putting together a video on BYC, and are wondering if you are also interested in having a live Q&A session just for us BYC members! Zack is becoming more involved with the BYC community, including sponsoring a BYC...

    Another thread on mites

I haven't actually seen mites, but my birds seem to have the symptoms. Bare backs, ragged feathers, and one bird even has feet that look soft. From the research I've been doing, it seems like these are classic signs of mites. Now, on to treatment. I've read about several treatments from...

    Moderator suggestion?

I am a moderator and administrator on several smaller sites, and I can only imagine the workload on a site the size of this one. I was wondering if, instead of having a few mods responsible for the entire site, you might consider having more mods, but having them responsible for one section...

    What made you happy today?

For the little (or not so little) things in life that make you happy. I'll start with two things that made me happy today. Today, my roommate got slushies delivered and surprised me with a cotton candy slushy. My new company got our MSA (Master Service Agreement) and SOW (Statement of Work)...

Things you wish you could say

This is a thread to vent in. No names, no identifying information. For example, "If you don't want to be called lazy, try not being lazy." Edit to add a couple more rules. Remember that we're in a public forum, so let's keep sensitive topics out of this thread. No politics, no religion, etc.

    Quail feather crafts

I am writing an article for the article writing contest, and I need pictures of quail feather crafts. Please let me know if you have some that I could use! Thank you!

    Bald backs

My celadon hatch has a bunch of birds with bald backs. This started when they were about 2-3 weeks old, and doesn't seem to be getting better. I don't see any mites or anything, and the person I got the eggs from thinks that they're picking on each other. I've never had this before, though...

    Vent sexing - pictures please

Does anyone have some good pictures of vent sexing young birds? I've read articles that say to look for a "bump", but they don't say where the bump is. Is it the part that you press on a fully adult male to get foam, or is it something in the cloaca? I want to get better at vent sexing birds...

Chick with hard lump under wing

I noticed this Coturnix quail chick's wing sticking out a bit, so I pulled it out to take a closer look. The wing seems to be fine, but there is a hard lump underneath it. It feels hard like bone. The lump runs from under the wing almost all the way to its tail, almost an inch long. Any...

    Grau fee feather sexing?

Does anyone happen to have pictures of male grau fee vs. female grau fee feather patterns? I believe they're supposed to be feather sexable and I have someone who wants a dozen hens, but I'm not sure about the grau and pansy fee. I've picked out four falb fee hens, but I need eight more.

    Nabiki's Falb/Grau/Pansy Fee hatch

Well, surprise, surprise. I thought they were supposed to hatch tomorrow, but I got home from work today and took a look to see if there were any pips, and there are lots. I was also shocked to see an empty egg, and upon looking further, three chicks!

    Nabiki's SSC hatch

I plan to take a lot of pictures and see how these guys change as they grow, so I thought I'd start a thread of their own. The first chick has hatched!

    Quail crafts

I had so many clear eggs from my hatch that I decided to have some fun. I'd love to see any crafts that anyone else has created from their quail as well! This was my first attempt at making floating candles. There are improvements to be made, but they're pretty, aren't they?

    Quail egg recipes

Okay, I know that you can do anything with quail eggs that you can do with chicken eggs, but I thought it might be fun to start a thread for recipes that are particularly good for quail eggs. I am hoping to have eggs soon, so I've started looking. I know I want to make scotch eggs, but...

    Mystery death

I got home from work today and went out to check the quail. They were all fine, but low on food so I took their water and feeder containers, washed and filled them. Took them out, gave them to the birds. All 7 were fine. I decide to give them sand in a box to play in, take it out, I didn't...

    Sonoma County, CA quail keepers/processors?

I was wondering if anyone on this board is in Sonoma County, CA, and whether they process their quail themselves or have someone to do it for them. I don't have a problem eating my extra quail, but I don't think I can kill them myself. I have been doing internet searches like crazy and have...

    Quail environment questions

I was planning on keeping my Coturnix quail in a combination coop with solid top and sides and 1/2" hardware cloth bottom and 6'x8' 1/2" hardware cloth enclosure. The coop portion will have wheels so it is movable and the enclosure can be picked up and moved easily as well. This allows me to...
