In 2007 I upgraded my coop from a 4x8 shack (which is now my brooder house) to a 10x12 barn style shed I found VERY cheap. So cheap it was nearly a steal. Hubby loaded it onto a flat bed trailer and hauled it home very slowly, 35 miles. We were constantly afraid it might fall apart but we made...

    goose egg turner, saved 40$

i was browsing adds for goose egg racks to put in my turner and for 40$ i instead built baskets out of 1/2" wire, attached them to my hen egg turner with twist ties for easy removal. It works great! and now i can spend that 40$ on eggs!

male ducks organ outside body and frozen

when i entered the pen today there was several patches of blood. like he was resting on the snow/ice and it froze there. then he got up, ripped it and sat in another spot. he's in a warm water bath but it's not retracting. Is there anything more i can do for him? What are your thoughts on...

using a dickey hatcher as an incubator? anyone?

he said they were 14x23 but i haven't heard back about the heights between the trays. so that they don't hit the tray above. I'm wondering if he sold it to someone else now.

using a dickey hatcher as an incubator? anyone?

well i still don't know if the hovabator egg turners will fit in the dickey hatcher trays, but i did find that by the time i spend the money for all the turners and buy the used hatcher, i might as well have bought a new dickey incubator. so I'll hold off.

using a dickey hatcher as an incubator? anyone?

yes, them yellow ones are what i have for my 3 styro hovabators. It would be nice to only keep one unit at the proper temp/hum levels. I might try conacting him monday and see what he thinks. Thanks

using a dickey hatcher as an incubator? anyone?

that's just it. it's a long drive and he doesn't have turners to check.

using a dickey hatcher as an incubator? anyone?

has anyone used a dickey hatcher as an incubator also? i know it works well the other way, using the incubator for hatching. I have the rare opportunity to purchase a 'one time use' dickey hatcher. I don't enjoy rolling the eggs. any chance the little yellow auto turners can fit into the...

    sloughing skin on one leg

update..... her leg, again, healed. but without feathering and without the normal yellow scales on her lower leg. I was thrilled she did so well as i hate snuffing life out without good cause. i put her back out with the flock, but three days later i found her dead. i watched her daily and she...

    sloughing skin on one leg

if she was older i would lean towards the scaly mite too but not in this case. The use of the hydrogen peroxide was only when she had skin. she doesn't have any this time. it all fell off like a glove.

    sloughing skin on one leg

i've had this chick since day old. came in a hatchery shipment of 50 and the only one with this problem. Around one week old i noticed an abnormal appearance to her skin on one leg. the best way to describe it is it looked like someone had taken a lighter to the bottom of her foot where it was...

My feather footed chicken got attacked by our dog

well, i can't tell you wether to put her outside or not, just what i would do. it depends on the flies in your area and with your conditions it might not be wise. here i'm dealing with 20* temps and plenty of snow. Your two biggest concerns i think are to keep her bum clean of poo and maggot...

My feather footed chicken got attacked by our dog

as long as it isn't leaving a greasy residue it should be ok. you could sew her up but it will cause her more stress in doing so. if you do sew her up then using neopsporin or other gel will be ok. i would only keep her inside if there is a fly problem outside. personally i would put her in a...

My feather footed chicken got attacked by our dog

definitely missing some skin there. i would leave it open and let it scab up. just be sure to keep her clean. if she's getting it dirty then i would use the antibiotic ointment. She'll be sore for a while but i don't think it's a fatal wound. are you sure she wasn't bitten anywhere else...

package deal from my three breed pens, AK

Hi Mark, if you live near me you can come over for chicks but this offer is for hatching chicken eggs. I can't ship chicks because our state will not participate with the NPIP program. I've tried to work with them to get it here but i guess the few of us willing to comply is not enough reason...
