    Not so urban anymore, but...

My family and I moved out to the Yelm area. We are currently living in a community that doesn't allow us to have hens, sadly. So I was hoping to find someone nearby that might have eggs to sell?

    should I be worried?

One of my girls (I haven't figured out who yet) has been laying rather larger eggs, and sometimes the egg is laid with some blood on it. They are all less then a year old, and this past year has been my first experience with chickens. I don't know if this is just because she is making large eggs...

    Urban Hen Mommas Member Page

The coop is now complete and all 8 pullets are living outdoors! The two older girls and six younger girls seem to be getting along okay. The dominant older girl, Rocky, has picked on the young runty chick a bit, but the others have protected her and Rocky hasn't been too agressive. I suppose she...

    still waiting at 27 weeks!!!!!

I think patience is key... yet so hard! My 26ish week old Barred Rock just started laying this week, still waiting for the RIR about the same age to lay as well. Hang in there and hopefully it will happen soon

    Things I Have Learned :)

I have learned my back yard is not nearly as large as I wish it could be with all the "chicken math" spinning in my head. 8 will have to do ...for now

    Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

I have read from different sources how much and when to put raw acv in water for chickens. My question is how much does everyone put in water for chicks and do you add it all the time or do you follow the once a month for a week method? Currently I have been giving my 3 week old chicks one tbs...

Runty chick allowed to roost the highest?!

Is it odd that the smallest chick (3 weeks tomorrow) is allowed to roost/sleep in the highest spot in the brooder?!

    luck with buff orpingtons

Thank you! I am happy to hear that she just may do great after all. Hopefully I am just worrying too much I will try some extra feedings on her own to see if we can't stimulate some growth!

    luck with buff orpingtons

Update on my little buff I have been watching her more closely in the last several days. She is eating, drinking and eliminating well. She is still feathering out at the same rate as the other buff orpington. When she's laying down next to some of the others, her body size doesn't appear much...

    Do chicks eat their fluff?

Quote: This is true. My 10 week old Wyandotte ate my earring right out of my ear. Down the hatch it went. She'd been eyeing it for two weeks prior! Now it's in her gizzard mashing up food and grass. I have noticed some of my chicks fancy shiney things... always pecking at the diamonds in...

if I had a dime for every time...

I swear I have to change the chicks water every few hours becasue they always have it full of bedding. The water is even sitting on top of an overturned plate to keep it higher. I don't want to make it so high that the runty one can't reach. It's driving me nuts.... anything else I can do to...

    $12 brooder suggestions

I would agree that there is probably a fire risk either way... If you want to go the cardboard route for cheep, I was noticing behind the local Costco (or any warehouse store I'm sure) they were getting rid of several melon/pumpkin sized boxes. I have never tried asking a warehouse store for...

Could they possibly be that hungry????

I was wondering the same thing... 6 nearly 3 weeks old go through a quart sized jar of food in about a day and a half, granted some of it is in the bedding, but they scratch at it and eat off the "floor" just the same. Hungry little girls... I guess that's what it takes to grow literally over night
