I was thinking the same thing about her head feathers- that slicked back look makes me think rooster. Has "she" started laying yet, or does she just have crazy feathers? A pullet is a female chicken less than a year old. They are technically not called hens until they are over a year.

Kiaa- Your birds are just stunning! I love the roo, He looks like he has a wig on with his long, flowing feathers. The look pretty big too. Mine is very small compared to the rest of the flock, a bantam for sure.

I'm just north of Eugene, Oregon. We're practically neighbors! We had the same weather- inches of rain over the weekend. My run is a mucky mess. My coop is elevated, so they have a dry area under it that's a pretty good size. They usually don't go under unless it's really pouring. I'll be...

I really do! I need a bantam coop. Really, we need to move so I can make this happen. Our house is for sale and we have acreage picked out. We just need to sell first.

I'm here! I just don't check in often. Little Nugget keeps getting picked on, then she flies over my big fence into the side yard. Twice now I've come home from work to her on the other side of the fence. It's maybe a 4 ft. fence with chicken wire extending it another 2 feet. She can't get out...

Oh, the things we do for our chickens! I've been considering trimming Nuggets foot feathers. She kind of hops around tripping over them because they are so long. Anyone do this?

Nugget finally laid an egg today! She's 28 weeks now. She was checking out the nesting boxes first thing this morning, then I found an egg out in the run. The rest of the girls lay in the nesting boxes exclusively, so it had to be Nugget's. It's small and whitish pink like my Silkie's eggs. When...

Maligator- Have you tried diatomaceous earth instead of the perathrin dust? I use organic, food-grade and sprinkle liberally all over the coop and run on a regular basis. I'm afraid to use chemicals on my girls!

Kiaa, beautiful birds! Thanks for sharing with us. Nugget update: She seems to be doing OK with the flock now. I still find her hiding under the dog house occasionally and getting panicked when the other chickens approach her, but overall she's doing well. She's still been sweet as ever and...

When I looked up roosters in the nesting box, that's what I found too. The rooster will show the girls that the nesting box is a good place to lay if one is about ready. I posted pics in the GLW thread and someone showed me a pic of that a rooster looks like. Mine looks nothing like a rooster...

We're working on getting property. Our house has been up for sale since June and we're wanting acreage. I want more chickens and to start a breeding program. More craziness out in the chicken yard today. The "rooster" climbed into the nesting box and sang an egg song. What in the.... No egg...

I wish I had room to do this. I have a separate fenced area for the chickens, with a short fence and gate between that leads to our yard. I put Nugget over there during the day for a few days, but she beat herself up on the fence trying to get back to the coop at night. If I had more room, I...

I cut Nugget's feathers around her eyes today, to see if that would help. She hasn't hid since and seems happy! Maybe she was paranoid because she couldn't see? She's such a pretty girl. I couldn't get a pic of her face.

Fishnet- Happy to hear Toria is doing better! I still don't know what to do about Nugget getting picked on. The Willy Roo is going in the freezer in about a week and a half, but I'm still seeing the other Wyandotte pick at her. Nugget is staying in the coop until it gets too hot, then hiding...

My plan of isolating the Wyandottes worked beautifully, until it started to get dark and the FREAKED out about not being able to get to the coop. Whoa. I put them back in with the others to roost and will separate them again in the morning. Ideas?

I can, actually. Nugget is a loner anyway and I figured she would be easier to isolate. I put the rooster in the other yard and moved Nugget back in with the girls. When I did this, the Wyandotte hen went after Nugget. Can I re-establish pecking order by removing the Wyandotte hen? I'd seen her...

Fishnet- Glad you got it figured out with Izzy. How much is it to send a sample in and did you have to go through the vet to do it? CedarAcres- Sorry to hear about losing a chicken. :( So far, the rooster hasn't been performing his duties. He doesn't help them find food and I've seen him run...

Fishnet, congratulations on getting Izzy's first egg! Well, I had to separate Nugget from the rest of the flock today. I noticed a few days ago she wouldn't come out of the coop. One morning she was still up on the roost, the next she was hiding in the corner. Today, she had stuffed herself...
