Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Moving a broody is tricky . Some just can not be moved . When I have succeeded it is done at night and locked in the new nest and cage . Release briefly for food , water and potty . If she returns to the nest on her own she is ok . Many just go nuts and quit .

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I will share some history on EE . Back in the 70s the hatcheries called them Araucana the Easter egg chicken . We developed Ameraucana from these . Then once Ameraucana were recognized as a breed the hatcheries adopted the name with their spelling . The breed history says we used Araucana as...

There is probably a good reason your best color is a clean face . With the focus on good lacing some breeders used blue Andalusion and not many years ago .

I have helped create many of the color varieties . Yes with crossing . Takes 10 years to get good birds . Crossing is not a easy fix .

Well it can be done but any black based color will take longer to get rid of black . Mixed breed will likely be even harder as you do not know what could be hiding .

Stay within the breed . Buff will cross well with the wheaten family and silver as a second choice . With silver cross wheaten over silver hens and save only pullets as they will not have the silver gene (sex linked) .

That comb probably is carrying single comb gene as a recessive . Not the best specimen however the hen seems to be a blue silver color . I see no sign of yellow skin or green legs . A place to start . With careful selection and breeding you could produce some nice birds . Start where you are...

I have been gone . Did not see a reply to your question . In my experience a late hatch is due to low temperature . Bump up the the temp 1/2 a degree to start with . Could possibly need 1 degree . Thermometers can be off a little bit .

I agree it is too early to tell . I will say cockerels often are darker but not always . So based on that I will say the first one is likely a cockerel .

I have to agree . The so called partridge color has been in there as long as I can remember . Early 1970's . While silver and Columbian genes were also present . The newer buff with white and lavender or bluish colors are newer . The dark or black headed trait was rare back then .

Well I have bad news for you . That is a EE and not a girl or self blue either . He has feathers on his legs so not Ameraucana . His tail shows darker feathers so he is probably splash . That is to say 2 copies of blue . Hard to say what other color genes he has . The red shoulders do not belong...

1 and 3 are Easter eggers . 2 looks to be self blue sometimes called lavender . #3 is often referred to as wild partridge but not partridge as in any standard breed . Very common EE color . #1 is does not match any standard color in any breed .

Well most hatchery stock is EE . There are a couple that have real Ameraucana . EE are nice birds for people who are not interested in showing . I still keep some EE since I like to explore the genetics .

You will get opinions like that from less experienced breeders who feel they know a lot . I would not say that they are Easter Eggers . Just culls . That is to say not breeder quality . We have struggled with the confusion between EE and Ameraucana . So yes if culls are sold they are often...

I have watched the comments . There is one thing no one has mentioned so I will . Your breeder is doing a good job on shipping eggs . 10 out of 12 hatched and all were fertile . Very good on shipped eggs . So the breeder has a good ration and ships very fresh eggs . The post office did no abuse...

I would say lavender tag is the best one . Nice transition to the tail . First one seems short in the back . Third one tail angle is too low .
