3.5 weeks after hatching out 10 chick, my broody started laying again today. The chicks are almost fully feathered and spending a lot less time around their mom. I'm hoping I'm done with babies for the season now.
And my broody hen is out and about with the chicks. So far, she's doing great keeping them together, keeping them warm, and keeping the other birds away. She all out jumped on one of the higher ranking hens! She's gonna do just fine protecting her babies.
Both genders will spar for pecking order position. At this point, cockerels should be pretty obvious, with well developed pink combs and patchy coloring.
The new family.
All ten. One isn't looking too good, but we'll see how it does. The silver partridge-type chick is very precocious, pulling on mom's feathers and comb.
All ten of my broody's eggs are empty! That means, only one didn't survive hatching, and that was mostly due to the hen's curiosity. Gotta love a broody with a 90% hatch rate. Whether or not she'll be able to take care of them all is something I'll find out in a day or two. For now, I'm just...
My broody now has three chicks hatched. I'll be posting adorable fluffy chicks and momma pictures tomorrow. So far, she's being a really good mom, keeping them tucked right up under her.
I'm just hoping she's better at keeping her chicks with her than my last broody was.
My broody got curious and tried to 'help' a chick hatch too soon. Poor baby didn't make it. Four more eggs pipped, and it looks like the hen has left those alone. Hoping for some healthy babies tomorrow morning.
Easter Eggers.
The dad. He has a single copy of barring, is silver, but carries a red/gold gene.
The biological mom is the pullet on the left. She's red/gold under that extended black.
Should produce quite a variety of colors. And I'm hoping for some really good muffs on these chicks.
