I have an ameraucana rooster that was hatched in August but isn't mating or crowing yet why is it taking him so long to mature? He's 8 months old and nothing yet. I'm sure he's not a hen, he has hackle feathers.

Some cockerels mature later than others. Yours seems to be one of those that is slow to mature. Do you have any other males in the group, or possibly older, very dominant hens? If so, he might also be a bit intimidated by them, hence the silence and lack of mating.

Either way, unless he’s showing signs of being unhealthy, I would not worry. I doubt you’ll have to wait for much longer

Thank you, there aren't any older roosters just hens and pullets in with him some even crouch down when I go to pet them. Only one older hen might be the issue she pecks him when I put food down and he runs and squawks.

I was hoping to start hatching chicks by now it's just frustrating I was hoping to fix whatever was stopping him. Maybe I'll remove the older hen and put her in a different pen.
