Hi. One of my ladies has vent gleet without a doubt, we are at the end of day #2. Ive been soaking her bottom in a warm Epsom salt bath every 12 hours and feeding yogurt (well tiny pieces of grapes covered in yogurt) along with water that ive added probiotic to. I feel like I am taking the right steps going off of everything Ive researched about vent gleet. One question that has gone un answered though is If I should cut back on her normal layer pelleted food for any reason, and replace that with something else or just let her eat that like she usually does. Any info helps.......Thanks

Normal feed is fine...but I would just give the yogurt without the grape, you don't need to add more sugar into her system.

I would also add Apple Cider Vinegar to the water (raw, unfiltered, with mother, plastic container only). ACV has pectin and fermented proteins that nourish the good bacteria to grow in the gut...which you are adding with the yogurt. The ACV will also help raise the ph in the gut to discourage bacterial growth.

Epsom salt bath will work...or just a vinegar bath if the salt is too strong for the tender area. I've also used Tinactin spray on the bottom to help kill the yeast.

It won't be an overnight solution, and you have to remain diligent...biggest part is getting the probiotics in her without adding anything that could encourage bacterial growth, and keeping the area clean.

Ok thanks so much! The small grapes is the only way I can get her to ingest the yogurt :-( she wont just eat it plain. Is there another way of getting her to eat the yogurt maybe?? Yea theres some yellow stuff "growing" on the underside of the vent (yeast I assume) and I found an egg shell in the cage today that looked like a deflated beach ball. I just finished her Epsom salt ACV soak and rubbed a little athletes foot cream around her vent.

I generally make a paste of the yogurt and some scratch...my birds love wild bird seed mix and will gobble it up that way in a paste.

Good luck with her.

It could...since her egg duct is likely irritated and moving things more quickly.

If that is something that is frequent, and you begin to get "cheese" balls...solid, weird looking cheesy things, that would be a very bad sign of severe infection deep inside the bird...with the end result being to cull.

But let's not go there...likely she's just irritated and things aren't working quite as smooth as normal. If she is a new layer, that would be part of the coming to lay process and quite normal to occur.

I think you are on the right track right now...remain diligent and keep a careful eye on her progress.
