Polish chickens sleep head downs and so do baby polish ! Polish cuddles melt hearts.
An interesting nest box experiment testing various fillings.
Scratch scratch..the sound of spring.

@featherhead007

Having many kids around from different mums can be... complicated ... Or very simple !

Dakota needs some loving too !
Mama hen has laid an egg and it looks as if she is beginning to wean the chicks !
--------------------------------------------------

@Grandma The Chicken

When Grandma comes in the humans coop she loves to share her wisdom, though the cat doesn't seem to appreciate.
Guess who is a useful helper !
--------------------------------------------------

@knoturavggrl

A pile of twelve nap-attacks...and cleaning the brooder is the best reason for another nap !

Some interesting stuff about SFH in the US.
Let's not forget ...the silkies. Not wildlings but still very lively!
--------------------------------------------------

@LhickenChicken

---------------------------------------------------

@TOMTE

🤗 FBA, a word to end this, posted after a long silence. Six weeks ago we lost our hen Laure in a way that left us angry and bitter. To move on from negative feelings I needed to take a step back from chicken stuff, and I gradually "dropped out" of BYC. But I'm attached to this thread and grateful for the kindness and help received here, so I'd like to still pop in just to do the synopsis once in a while. I hope no one finds this weird ! 🤷. Wish you all a nice weekend.
Drop in anytime and you know you can always PM any of us any time. I am truly sad with what happened to Laure, over the years with the horses and now with the chooks I have had to come to terms with the death of my fur/ feathered friends.

Sometimes is seems that no matter what you do, something happens and it just makes me so furious that I couldn't stop or prevent or somehow predict what would happen (I still blame myself for my father's death after almost 8 yrs). I hate to use the words 'get used to', so what I will say is that over time I have learnt to understand and manage my emotions and feelings towards such things.

Absolutely doesn't make it easier but it does help to accept and move on. Of course each person is different, but I feel that the big thing is to accept, acknowledge, mourn and not dwell. Easier said than done, and it is absolutely alright to be sad and upset - this is a normal and human reaction.

We had a windy day yesterday but very chilly. Hope you have someone to hold the ladder steady before climbing. Trimming trees while on a ladder should be a 2 person job for safety. Even my DH doesn't like an unstable ground ladder when both arms are reaching to prune limbs!

I dealt 3 yrs in a row w/ bumblefoot w/ our Dominiques before discovering how they got it...perching/snoozing on the edges of both their sandbox cedar border & the rough cement garden bed borders!

I was using my 3 step ladder, but it is so darn cold and windy, and the wind almost blew me off the ladder! I gave up, but did manage to get the Asian Pear trees pruned up. The Peach trees will be a 'tomorrow' job.

The chooks were very interested in what I was doing and followed me around as I clipped, trimmed.... backed up to get a better look, move in prune some more here and there.... another look. Every time I moved they moved with me, I would eyeball the tree and they would look to see what I was looking at hahahaha.

When I snipped of branches they would run in to see if there was anything yummy to eat, peck at some of the buds. Then follow me as I did another look. Too funny hahaha.

But gosh the wind is just howling here! The temp has gone from 7C this morning to now only 3C - brrrrr!

Lesson for future: never go to a hatchery. Not even to buy eight chicks.
Owing to my abysmal hatch rate, I decided to go get some Russian Orloff to complement my flock. They're unsexed so I might get some roosters. For $8 each it was a better price than Peavey mart ever had. The guy showed me around, he had Wheaten Ameraucana, Welsummer, Black copper marans, and even two silkies.
You can guess what happened.
I ended up marching home with ten chicks. 3 wheaten ameraucana, 3 welsummer, and 4 Russian Orloff.
They're doing really well.
The four special needs chicks are also doing better. The legs on the splay legs chicks are becoming less splayed and the wry neck is slowly correcting itself. The chipmunk chick that was having issues yesterday (the one I was hand feeding) can eat on his/her own now and had its first poop.
What am I if not an enabler for myself?
Oh so this is the chicken math you msg me about hahaha - I say good! Now who is this person who has the Orloff - if I go back pipelining I will need to make a stop there on my way home for some chicklets hahahaha :)

I am hoping for mostly pullets for you! Gosh I can't wait to see photos!

Got a "dinosaur egg shell" for kiddo, it's a blown ostrich egg. Super cool.

Stopped at a different farm and home on our way home and found white leghorns for my mother in law. Four...with an extra as "boy insurance"
And 2 cream legbars for kiddo since ours hatched out as boys.
