Hey everyone.

Thought I would pop on for a second. Came home to a notice that my area is going to experience a internet service outage for a major update. Not estimated time for when service will be restored and it is for a big area.

Lovely, I have my tooth cut out tomorrow and planned on when I was awake the next few days to catch up on some tv.

I also have a silkie egg update from my co-worker. Her first chick hatched this morning early. The first silkie out....is BLUE!!! It is confirmed, I can get blue from my group. If I do not hatch out a blue for myself I will cry.

Can’t go wrong with Blue!

Mugs and Roos
We have too many Roos 4 to be exact. (Silkies don’t count yet, to hard to tell) I will do my best to rehome the 3 we can’t keep.
On a happier note, tonight we selected one boy to keep and have begun naming them.

Our boy that is staying- Thyme he is the friendliest and sweetest of the bunch.

How can you tell the boys from girls so early? Did the boys try to crow...or...?

Cuties!!!

We completed the foundation for the new shed coop today! I have been researching bedding options. I came across a very well researched article going over the different options and figured I would pass it along in case it interested anyone else. I have decided to go with mid grade contractor sand.

We never had a shed coop to use sand (might need a ShopVac to clean up sandy floor crevices?) but we definitely love that we chose to make a sandbox dustbath for our flock. It's a 4'x4' cedar raised garden bed filled w/ child's play sand w/ a 10'x10' canopy over it to shade in the summer & keep dry during rain. Easy to sift out poop & easy to cover up at night w/ a thick beach mat to keep out cats who want it as a litter box!

No crowing yet, they are 4 weeks old today. They have straight combs so it’s fairly easy much like Marans are. All four that have more prominent combs are already taking on a pink hue. The girls have smaller combs and are not at all pink. Also, as further evidence, all 4 that have the larger combs also have thicker legs and are taller than the ones with smaller combs.

I will wait another few weeks to rehome but I feel pretty sure those 4 are boys. I could have another late bloomer Roo though for sure.

The Silkies are a whole other ball of wax though. It’s impossible to say with any surety. By stance and behavior I can guess that Pebbles seems to be a boy and Nyx seems to be a pullet but I am so far from sure. I may just go ahead and have them tested. I haven’t decided yet.
