It as simple as snipping a nail a wee bit short so you can get a couple drops of blood. The lab I use sends a nice cardboard-like piece of board to put the blood drops on. For this I wait till they are about 8 weeks so their nails are bigger. No crowing yet, they are 4 weeks old today. They have straight combs so it’s fairly easy much like Marans are. All four that have more prominent combs are already taking on a pink hue. The girls have smaller combs and are not at all pink. Also, as further evidence, all 4 that have the larger combs also have thicker legs and are taller than the ones with smaller combs.
I will wait another few weeks to rehome but I feel pretty sure those 4 are boys. I could have another late bloomer Roo though for sure.
The Silkies are a whole other ball of wax though. It’s impossible to say with any surety. By stance and behavior I can guess that Pebbles seems to be a boy and Nyx seems to be a pullet but I am so far from sure. I may just go ahead and have them tested. I haven’t decided yet.
I decided to not test Jolly, she is here until she lays an egg or crows. Same with Holly.
