i just found a hen with maggots on her vent. She was bathed and we cleaned it out. She is refusing to drink but I have managed to get some water down her throat with a syringe. She is in a cage by herself with a fan on her since it's almost 95 degrees. She is a Plymouth Rock so she doesn't fair well with heat. Her comb is pale and she refuses to open her eyes. She is eating only dry oats. Please help!!!!

Pick off as many as you can without gagging too bad.
Wash her butt well, and use something like Neosporin, Bacitracin, or similar.
Glob that on all over, it will do two things.
Keep the skin happy, and SMOTHER the maggots.
You may have to do this a few times.
Good luck!
And check everyone elses butts, too.

I washed her around one this afternoon and it is almost 8:30 at my house and I just checked and she is free of maggots. I dusted her behind with diatomaceous earth because it is a natural bug killer. I will use neosporin tomorrow when I check on her. Thank you so much! God Bless.

If the comb is already pale and she is really that lethargic, it may be too late to do much more than make her comfortable. Was there a wound where the maggots were? Maggots usually don't appear without some kind of injured tissue.

I found that my standard cochin hens attract flies with heavy feathering on their bottoms and poop sticking to it. I wash area well and pick off any maggots then apply Blu-cote. It actually is more of a purple color and comes in a small spray can bought at the farm store. Works fast to heal and deters any flies from bothering them.

I recommend a blob of SWAT. It's used for flystrike on horses. It comes in a little pot and you get it at pet/feed stores. I saved a rooster with it. Just gob it on no matter how bad it looks don't give up on the hen.

I have a spray bottle of Blu-Kote! Yay! If this doesn't work I will get some SWAT. Thanks! I'll keep y'all posted!

She is standing up on her own. Still not drinking or eating. It's almost 100 here in KY. I still have the fan on her. I have gotten some water into her throat with the syringe. I sprayed her bottom. I'm going to the feed store tomorrow night when I get paid. I will buy a container of SWAT & get some electrolytes to perk her up. She's doing somewhat better!
