Here is where I will post pictures and updates of the 6 chicks that hatched from the 7 eggs of my original flock, killed by neighbors dogs. I'm over the moon to have some of their babies to raise.

Two are Buff Orp x Speckled Sussex (orange with no markings)
and 4 ended up being (I believe) Buff Orp x Silver Laced Wyandotte

1 didn't hatch, she ruptured her yolk sac when pipping. RIP sweet Hunnicutt! Tell your mama Tilly we miss her!

We can guess as to how many Pullets vs. Cockerels I end up with. Hopefully more females than males!!
I'm suspicious of the three lighter yellow Wyandotte crosses, as I've read that the babies should be sex linked from hatch (white/silver being males and red/yellow being females). They are yellow but they are light, and the other Wyandotte cross is more orange colored with more black markings. But who knows! They'll all be cute I'm sure.

I am eager to see how the speckled Sussex crosses will turn out. I saw someone on here referred to them as "sussingtons" which I kind of like!

Here they are as adorable fluff balls!

Awww they are adorable
Somehow I got lucky last time I hatched chicks and I guessed all their genders correctly (except 1) in the first few days
I can’t wait to see how their little feathers turn out

I got little wind up chicks for my students to take home (they were so disappointed they couldn’t keep a chick!) and we put one in the brooder. One of the little boys (I think the lighter ones are cockerels) is so brave and was very quick to investigate the impostor! It was so cute.

These chicks are so sweet and come rubbing up to my hand every time I put it in the brooder

Oh my goodness that is TOO CUTE! What a fun teacher, I bet the kids have just loved this!!!

I’m sorry if this seems morbid, but it felt like the right thing to do. I know I’m a little extra about my chickens but I dearly loved their parents, and now these precious little peeps too.

I helped Hunnicutt (the one we lost) out of her shell once I got home to figure out for sure what went wrong and to see if it was something I could have prevented and learned from. She hadn’t absorbed her yolk sac, it was still exposed and she definitely ruptured it somewhere along the way while positioning and attempting to pip, which is why the yolk was liquid inside the egg. I don’t think there was anything I could have done. Which I thought would make me feel a little better, but I’m still sad.

It felt right to take her out and clean her up instead of leaving her all sticky in her shell, and lay her to rest with her mama Tilly. It was especially difficult for me because after looking at her plumage she was definitely a pullet. I would have been sad to lose a cockerel, but it’s especially hard knowing we would have surely kept her for life!

I think she looks peaceful and comfortable, and I’m sure she would have been just as sweet as her siblings are.

RIP little Hunni ❤️ say hello to your sweet mama for me!
