Is Meyer hatchery a good one to order from?

I was thinking of maybe ordering some chicks from Meyer hatchery so that I could pick what breed I want. I was wondering if they are good and if anyone has any warnings about them. I am curious if their chickens are healthy because I don’t want to have to deal with any health issues. Any tips or warnings would be very helpful 😊 I have read a few other threads on here and they seem good but wanted to make one of my own just to make sure.
I only order from Cackle Hatchery. They have a 3 chick minimum, 1 rooster minimum. The birds are extremely healthy. Cackle is the ONLY place to get purebred Ameraucanas bred to standard, separated by color. Ameraucanas are a favorite of Cackle's owner. I have known of many other people being disappointed by Meyer, McMurray, and all of the other hatcheries. Beware.

Thanks for adding your advice in!

I’ve placed 4 orders with Meyers over the last 2 yrs. I’ve had really good luck with them. This last shipment was 42 chicks with 1 DOA they refunded. All orders have been 100% correct as far as breeds ands hens vs Roos. They often run specials for chicks usually what Iend up ordering.

We ordered our chicks from Meyer this spring, and they all arrived healthy and lively and 100% correct for breeds and sexing.

They do charge more for shipping on small orders, but the chicks are very well packed with warmers if appropriate for the weather and a dose of vitamins/electrolytes to give them a boost once they arrive and start drinking. It's not a "small order fee" because it is only applied if you are shipping chicks, if you select pick up in store the $65 shipping charge does not apply. We were going to drive (from IL) to pick our chicks up, but an unexpected vet bill put the kibosh on that. Even so, the shipping charge is less than the cost of gas for us to drive there. So while the hit to the bank account was more noticeable, it was actually less expensive for us to pay for shipping 6 chicks.

My only "complaint" is that my legbar pullet has had health issues related to her reproductive system (developed "water belly" at onset of laying) and is not going to get to live a long life. But that's not anyone's fault, it's just one of those things that happens.

Good to know! Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Thanks! I don’t really mind a small order fee, I just want the chicks to be healthy and happy! Sorry about your leghorn. It hurts to have a sick chicken and know they won’t make it :hugs

I would recommend them! I ordered a total of 28 chicks from them, in 3 separate shipments this past fall, with only 1 dying about 48 hrs after arrival. I called after the 48hr mark, and they replaced it. I think it really depends on USPS and the experience and hours it takes for the shipment to arrive, though. I am in SW VA and to my surprise, all three shipments each took no more than about 28hrs before my PO called me to tell me they had arrived. The one that died, they paid the ( 50 dollar) shipping, so I ordered a few more as well ( 3 minimum per shipment). All are 12-15weeks old now and have only lost one since due to the extreme cold here.

All good to know! Do you know if their Orpingtons are healthy? I had one who had water belly in the past and i don’t want to go through that again.
I ordered one Chocolate Orpington from them in October and she's been very healthy, even when temps have gone down into the teens at night here. She is a bit skittish, however, which doesn't fit the breed's normal temperament.
