Newbie Question about Wheatgrass

Hello all...

I want my chickens to benefit from wheatgrass... Can I grow it outdoors in the ground just like regular grass?

Or do i need to sprout them in growing trays and cut them every 10 days or so...

I have wheatgrass growing in pots. I actually got it for my cat believe it or not. Chickens demolished the last 10 inch pot I put in their coop. They even took the root system out of the pot and took it apart. I only gave it to them as a treat though and they won't get another until it sprouts up and is at least 5 inches long or so. I also grow other stuff just for my chickens in pots. I currently have their old coop spot growing up with a chicken seed mix I got online. I will move the coop back onto that spot once it has grown in a lot more. I will then do growing plots like another BYC member did in their coop area only mine will not be anywhere near as cool as theirs.

oh and I grow my pots outside. Don't see why you couldn't direct sow outside once danger of frost is gone.

kool, thnx for your reply maclady... I'm gonna try throwing some seeds out and hopefully they'll grow into some fine snacks for these chickens.

Do a search for salad bar and you will also find threads about it. A salad bar is basically an area with maybe 6" high edges, covered in hardware cloth where the seed sprouts underneath and allows the chickens to walk on the wire and eat thru it..but doesn't allow the chickens to scratch it all up and kill it.

This forum tends to be at the top of google a lot! You can also do a search on you tube for wheat grass..there are tons of how to videos.

I only grow it indoors in the winter. They also get sprouts in the winter. The rest of the time, I grow things outside for them.
